The Circle R Round-Up - September 2005 |
THE CIRCLE R CUP
The inaugural Circle R Cup Championship is open to all golfers. It is our hope that this will be the premier golf event in North San Diego County. The Cup will go to the best gross and net scores, playing from the tips on one of the most challenging layouts in San Diego County. Additional net and flighted contests will be held for both ladies and gentlemen. The tournament starts at 10:00 on Saturday the 17th of September. The price for members is only $10 and for non-members $50 which includes 18 holes of golf, cart, commemorative tee prizes and lots of tournament prizes. You may sign up as a foursome if you desire. Originally called the Circle R Golf Resort, Castle Creek is celebrating its' 50th anniversary of 18 holes of championship golf. The Circle R Golf Resort was a 9-hole golf course, built in 1948, making it one of the oldest clubs in San Diego County. In 1956, another 9 holes were added on the present front nine.
THE CIRCLE R ROUNDUP
Following the Circle R Cup tournament on September 17 Castle Creek will be hosting its first “Circle R Roundup” Western Style Hoedown on the patio. The evening festivities will feature a live western band with dinner music from 7:00 to 10:00. Hayrides for kids of all ages will tour the golf course property. The menu includes finger licken good ribs, chicken and all the fixins. The saloon in the clubhouse will be open to all through out the day and cocktails will be served on the patio commencing at 6:30. All this for only $20 per person ($15 kids 16 and under). Seating is limited so make your reservations now by calling (760) 749 2877 extension 203.
ACES ARE WILD IN AUGUST!

Long time members and fellow Octogenarians, Jane Mullen and Harry Carter, created excitement on the course by combining for 3 Holes in One. Jane knocked her tee shot in the hole on #17, using her trusty fairway wood on August 9th. It was her 2nd ace at Castle Creek. Harry accomplished the incredible feat of making a hole in one on the same hole twice in a six weeks period. Harry aced #8 with a 6 iron on June 27th, and five weeks later, pulled out his 7 iron and knocked it straight into the hole again on one bounce! What is even more remarkable is that Harry has played here for over 27 years and has never made a hole in one before! Jane will receive a special plaque for her ace. As for Harry, he is receiving a custom 2 ace plaque so he can proudly show off his 1 in a million feat!
Manager’s Report
Earlier this year, we established a Members’ Advisory Board to help management in addressing the needs and concerns of the membership. The board, strictly voluntary, is comprised of the leaders of the various clubs at Castle Creek. We usually meet on the third Monday of each month. Topics discussed include course rules, condition, upcoming events, and the like. If you have any questions or concerns, please bring them up to the board of your club, and they will make sure that we will address the issue at the next advisory meeting. Or, if you like, you can always drop me a note or talk to me directly. The management's goal is the same as our golfers - to make Castle Creek the best club around!

Oh’s Tee Shots
We are continuing in our efforts to bring back our greens from the losses suffered during July's heat wave. Please be patient with us, particularly on days when we don't mow. This is done when we have seeded the previous day. Mowing immediately afterwards will pick up a large portion of the broadcasted seeds, nullifying the previous day's efforts. We are working on ways to improve our water, including using potable water or even re-drilling our wells to a lower level. Our water salt level is more than 3 times that of potable. Watering our greens with well water is similar to watering with 1/2 seawater!
On or about the 15th of this month, you will see the start of our Arundo eradication in the creek. This is being done in conjunction with the Mission Resource Conservation District, and will take the better part of this winter to complete.

MEN’S CLUB NEWS
President Art Lynch is on vacation returning in September. For those of you who are considering joining the Castle Creek Men's Golf club, here is a list of scheduled activities: The Men's Club plays every Wednesday morning. Some of the major tournaments are followed by a luncheon in the Clubhouse after play, and every December we have a dinner dance for members, their spouses, and guests. The Senior's Club, affiliated with the Men's Club, plays every Monday and schedules a luncheon after play every other month. The Bandits (a very appropriate name) play every Friday morning. In addition, you may want to join the Men's Club in Inter League play, playing against other Men's Club members from courses around the San Diego area. You are invited to join this
active group of golfers. Just call the Pro Shop for additional information at 760 749-2877. You can receive additional information about the Castle Creek Golf Club on the Internet at: www.castlecreekcc.com
FROM THE SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA GOLF ASSOCIATION ETIQUETTE MANUAL
Do not stand over your ball for a long period of time before making your shot. Walter Hagen, a famous golfer in the 1920’s, coined the best phrase for this philosophy: Miss it quick’.
SENIOR’S INTER-CLUB TEAM

Maybe Hideki is right!! During the month of August and late July we played a total of 6 games losing 4 of them The team played a match against El Camino late in July and a match against Escondido “A” the first part of August. We got a tie here against El Camino (9 to 9) but lost 12 to 6 over there. Dennis Goode got an “At A Boy” for his low score of 69 in the teams tying effort at El Camino and Dan Boessow made a fine contribution with a net 71. Will Nelson and Dennnis Goode shot low nets of 70 and 71 respectively in the teams losing effort here at home.
Our Escondido match started here on August 5th and the team came away with a narrow victory of 9 to 8. Ken Smith, the team captain, led the victorious effort with a fine net of 70. Unfortunately, the Escondido team had to play with one team member short when one of their players failed to show up. In such cases the person who fails to show up forfeits his 3 points. As it turned out, that 3 points proved to be the difference. It was a very different story over at Escondido on the 12th when the team traveled there for the re-match. Four of their players shot scored in the 60’s and manhandled us 15 to 3. Fred Holtermann scored a fine low net of 68 in leading the Castle Creek losing effort and was awarded an “At A Boy”. The second team of Ron Williams and John Lizotte scored the only 3 points won by the team.
A match against Coronado was played there on August the 18th. Our team, Captained by Hal Helfand, put up a good fight but lost a close match 8 to 10. Warren Tankersley shot a great 77 for a low net of 64 and his team mate, Hal Helfand had a net 69 so their 2 man team scored 6 of the groups 8 points. Ron Williams also had a fine 69 for the 2nd team, which accounted for the other 2 points. The return match here was also lost by a score of 5 to 13. Bud Barnes scored the lowest net of 66. The Inter-Club team is now placed 11th out of the 20 teams in the league with only 6 more matches to go before the end of the season.
Ken Smith, Team Captain
Rules by Ken Smith
Please review Local Rule #7 in the 2004 issue of the Men's Club Handbook as it applies to our Provisional Ball rule on the water hazard holes of #3 - 8 - 12 - 14 - 16 and 17. This local rule makes no provision for play from a "Drop Area". Castle Creek Club Management has recently established drop areas on holes 3, 14 and 16 in an effort to speed up play and while the public may use those drop areas, Men’s Club members must observe our Provisional Ball rule. Please also be aware that these stipulations are equally applicable to the Green Tees. Be sure to follow proper procedures in taking relief from one of the water hazards
Senior’s Men’s Club
The Seniors Men’s Club championship will be held on the 12th and 19th of September. This is a low net event. All entrants will be broken down into flights based on their handicap. There will be prizes for each flight. The overall low net player, regardless of flight, will be the Senior Club Champion. In the event of a tie for Club Championship, there will be an immediate 3-hole playoff. The holes played will be 1, 17, and 19. The low net of these three holes will determine the champion.

(Editor's note: Dave says, “The U.S. Open Championship has the Claret Jug and the Seniors have the Brown Jug. I have one for the trophy”! I wonder if it is filled with something?)

WOMEN’S CLUB NEWS
It's been a busy month for the ladies. Santa Margarita Team Play began in earnest with five play dates in August. Combine that with our regular Tuesday ladies day play, MACC, Couples and Sundowners Tournaments, now that's a lot of golf! The team is doing well, holding second place net by a slim margin.
Many thanks to PAM ESTES, handicap chair, who worked with Dianne Agrell, SDCWGA handicap director to update our indices for team play. Our June and July posted scores were not downloaded to the EHS system due to a computer glitch. The 22 team players' indices had to be recalculated. It was a huge job that had to be done before team play began on August 8th.
I am thrilled to see back on the course both Shirley Richard (shortly after undergoing 7 weeks of radiation in Los Angeles) and Mary Ann Grubaugh (recently recovered from a broken pelvis).
Betty Witty has agreed to chair the nominating committee for CCWGC's 2006 officers. She is looking for volunteers to assist her in the selection of a slate and the installation luncheon in January 2006. If you were interested in helping her or serving as an officer or board member, Betty would love to hear from you.
Betty Wood, rules chair, made a short presentation at the September general meeting and luncheon about Golf Etiquette and Good Sportsmanship. She reviewed pace of play, cell phone usage, and other points that help to ensure a pleasant time on the course.
Looking forward to December, Bettye Morris has graciously agreed to chair the See's Candy fundraiser again this year. All items will be available at discounted prices. Watch for the catalog and order sheet to be posted soon and plan to stock up on the See’s delicious treats of your choice.
Your club officers and board members want you to have a great golfing experience, both on the course and through ladies' club camaraderie. Please bring your concerns or questions to any of us at any time.
Sue Ellen Tankersley, President

SWEEPS
Aces for the month of July 2005, are Debi Harlow from the Red Tees and Shirley Ekstrom from the Green Tees. Both ladies had a net score of 69.
Kudos to all you stalwart women who continued to come out to play every Tuesday despite the extremely warm temperatures this past month. Let’s hope the cooling trend we are experiencing continues.
As our greens keeper has told everyone, the greens are not doing so well, but they have been this way before and, though we are having a difficult time putting, they will survive and be great again, so not to worry, we will persevere.
Jan Salisbury, Sweeps Chair
CHRISTMAS CRAFT/GIFT FAIRE
We are gearing up for our first annual Christmas Crafts/Gift Faire. It will be held on Saturday, November 12, 2005 in the Banquet Room from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. There will be a varied selection of custom crafted items, as well as special gifts for the public’s shopping delight. Shoppers will find something for everyone on their holiday gift-giving list. To lend an atmosphere of holiday cheer and shopping, there will be cookies (donated by the Ladies’ Club with coffee and a cold beverage (donated by CCGC management) served. In addition, the room will be decked out in Christmas decor. Please tell all your friends, family, and neighbors of this upcoming event. We will have flyers printed in the very near future to be placed at many different locations. (Hairdressers, doctors, and dentists offices, other golf courses, etc). Let’s get the word out!
