The Circle R Round-Up - October 2006 |
THE TREE MAN IS COMING

Tree Trimming Program Starts - To Continue Throughout the Year
Those of you who have played recently have probably noticed the big difference on holes #11 and #18, where we have eliminated and trimmed the trees by the green. This is the start of our yearlong tree-trimming program that will feature several trees each month being treated. Our first priority will be for safety and for green enhancement. Trees are the greens keeper’s worst enemy as they literally suck the nutrients intended for the green. In addition, they reduce airflow, heating up the greens during the hot summer months. The next time you visit the View Restaurant, you’ll be amazed at the difference trimming the tree by #18 green has made to your view! Even from the fairway side you can notice the improvement as shown in the above photos, one taken before and one taken following the lacing of this majestic tree on the east side of the green.
Members Prepare for Oktoberfest Week
This year, on October 28 and for the first time, the Members Association of Castle Creek will hold its annual dinner/dance festivities on Saturday instead of Thursday. This will be preceded by an "Oktoberfest" golf tournament on Thursday, the 26th. The management has assured us that their will be plenty of German beer for both events. The Thursday golf tournament will feature a "new course" (read all about it on page 2 of this newsletter) where we will flip-flop 8 and 9 with 17 and 18. Special score cards have been prepared showing the revised handicap hole ratings calculated by John Lizotte and based on over 400 score card scores. “Dewey, the Music Man”, will provide the Saturday evening entertainment and you can be sure he will play polka music throughout the night so all of you brush up on your polka dance routines. Oktoberfest Decorations by Kendelle and Jane. A special delectable German dinner is planned with Bavarian flank steak as the entree. It will be interesting to see what sort of "German" dress outfits will appear. Remember, Oktoberfest dress is encouraged but not mandatory. For all those that are thinking about joining the member's association, the MACC board has invited you to join the MACC this month for 2007 and become eligible for this year's golf tournament and a special reduced rate for the dinner/dance party. See or call Ken Smith for information and payment. Membership in MACC is open to all members of the Castle Creek Country Club.
Manager’s Report
A part of our condominium / clubhouse renovation program may include the re-routing of the 2 finishing holes on each side. Our thinking is that by creating a crossover from #16 to #8, and vice versa, the ensuing traffic flow would make more sense. With #17 and #18 being the new #8 and #9, our golfers would be able to pass the snack bar and proceed to the 10th tee in a smoother fashion. At the same time, golfers playing the *new* #17 and #18 (currently #8 and #9) would be able to proceed directly to the parking lot. Another reason we are contemplating this change would be so that #18 would now finish in front of the clubhouse, enabling people in the lounge and restaurant to watch the golfers finish. Part of our clubhouse remodel plans includes the addition of a balcony outside the lounge and adding a lake on the current 39. Imagine how much fun it will be, sitting on the balcony watching the golfers negotiate the lake on their approach to the green!
With that in mind, we will be conducting a one-day experiment of reversing the final two holes on Thursday, October 26. We would like to encourage all members and their guests to play on that day in order to give us valuable feed back. Please try to make a point of playing. Larry Taylor- General Manager
Oh’s Tee Shots

I must tell you how pleased I am on how our greens have recovered so quickly from our recent aerification. Please bear with us as we lower the greens height each week. With new seedlings and a sandy environment, we just can’t cut as low as we’d like. If we did, the result would be small shoots being pulled out as well as pitted knife blades. By mid October, our greens will be at tournament speed.
<
Speaking of mid October, we will be over seeding the fairways with winter rye on October 16 and 17. This process will be less invasive than what you would see at the desert. We will be mowing the fairways at a slightly lower height those days with a special sweeper following behind. The next step will feature a large boom-like device that will drop the seeds at a pre-arranged rate. Following that, the fairways will be closed to cart traffic for the rest of the week as we water lightly and continuously throughout the day to ensure germination. The course will be playing under winter rules- lift, clean, and place. For those of you playing in the weekly member events, please consult with your rules chairperson for clarification. Tee Oh- Superintendent
News From The View
The month of October will feature Oktoberfest draft beers available at the bar. We will continue our favorite Thursday night specials from throughout the world. In addition, we will be offering more specials each night for dinner. Look for our new menu to be unveiled next month Hope to see you out! Chef Michael

Castle Creek CC would like to welcome the following new members to our great club:
Kwang Chul Cho, Jae Sim Oh
Myung Jae Cho. Ilson Kim and

We were able to transfer 5 memberships in September. We are now back at our maximum 200 memberships
SAM’S THE MAN!
On Wednesday September 20th, Sam pulled out his trusty 9 wood and launched a perfect shot toward the green. While looking for his ball he heard the groundskeeper say "in the hole". Sure enough his ball was nestled at the bottom of the cup for a Hole-In-One!
MEN'S CLUB NEWS
The year is rapidly coming to a close and the days are getting shorter. We have been blessed with our wonderful San Diego weather this year, and it has surely helped to keep the course in good shape. From the Men’s Club to the management and T. O. and his staff good job well done.
Your board is in the process of bringing the Men’s Club handbook up to date. It will incorporate all of the rules and the new local rules. This book has not been published since 2004 and when complete, every one in the men’s club will have a copy to refer to.
Again as I have said before if there are complaints or concerns. Don’t take them out on any one individual put it in writing and submit it to the board. We are here to try and make it enjoyable for all players. It’s tough to please all of the people all of the time. So if we please the majority of the people most of the time we have earned our pay, and the pay is zero, and our hope is that you get more than what you paid for. Art Lynch, President
TRAVELING TEAM
The team of Fred Holtermann, Ken Smith, Art lynch, Hidecki Shimazaki, John Lizotte and Dan Albee drove down to cottonwood on August 31st. Art offered to take his RV so all 6 of the team members were able to ride together, enjoy coffee and sweet rolls and enjoy good fellowship. Unfortunately, the team lost by a score of 14 to 4. (Too much fellowship?) In the return match here the following Friday, the team pulled off a 13 to 5 crushing of cottonwood.
The 19th match of the season was held at Torrey Pines on the 18th of September. Our team consisted of Myron Vanetsky, Ken Smith, Jim Brown, Dan Albee, Clell Ward, and Bob Agnew. A difficult day culminated in a very closely played loss by the score of 10 to 8. The return match here on the following Friday resulted in a much more rewarding win by the score of 14 to 4.

RULES
There has been a lot of discussion recently among our members concerning what the proper procedure is for scoring in our tournaments. A review of the USGA decisions on the rules of golf (2006-2007) reveals the following.
6-6a. “After each hole the marker should check the score with the competitor and record it. On completion of the round the marker must sign the scorecard and hand it to the competitor. If more than one marker records the scores, each must sign for the part for which he is responsible.”
6-6b. “After completion of the round, the competitor should check his score for each hole and settle any doubtful points with the committee. He must ensure that the marker or markers have signed the score card, sign the score card himself and return it to the committee as soon as possible.”
The penalty for breach of this rule is disqualification.
It seems conclusive and very clear what the intent of these rules is. In a golf competition conducted by the men’s club, a player must maintain a score card, have a marker who can attest to his score, sign, and return the score card to the committee as soon as possible.

WOMEN’S CLUB NEWS
Because of a lot of other news these last few months, a big thank you to Mara Lee Ashworth is belated. The club thanks Mara Lee for her leadership in collecting golf equipment and $175.00 for Jr. Golf. We were happy to contribute to the future of golf. As we head into fall, there are plenty activities in the works. Coming the 1st Tuesday in Oct., Karen Georgens is organizing another Rally for a Cure event. Given her past history of highly successful Rallies, we know the day will be fun. It will be a pink and white day for a worthy cause and an opportunity to remember our friends that we have lost.
With about a month and a half to go, our drive to sign up people for the Viejas day trip on Thursday, Nov. 16th tallies to date, 69 paid passengers. Our goal is to have 94 people signed up. Part of the proceeds will benefit Elizabeth Hospice. Please pass on this invitation to all friends and family. Let’s fill those two buses!
Ladies, the Board has approved the use of GPS devices. The guideline is that the device used only measures distance. The device may be used at anytime on the course.
Irene Fedeli, our current Club Champion, will be representing CCWGC in early October at the Master’s Tournament. The two-day event, for all club champions, is being played in the Los Angeles area. Let’s send Irene our good thoughts and positive energy for a successful tournament. With her will and skill, no doubt she will do just fine. Barbara Bell, President
TOURNAMENTS

Choosing the better score on each hole out of a two-day tournament clearly demonstrates what we are capable of achieving. Dorothy Berger illustrated that as she won the CCWGC Individual Eclectic with the low net over the field of 61. On six holes Dorothy improved her score by a total of 14 strokes on the second day of the tournament. Other winners include: First flight - 1st Debra Harlow with 70, 2nd Jan Salisbury with 73, 3rd Cookie Johnson with 75; Second flight - 1st Nancy Bassett and Dawn Jessee tie with 67, 3rd Hanalei Sun with 71; Third flight - 1st Lola Fleck with 65, 2nd Betty Wood with 66, 3rd Monita Patry with 70 and Fourth flight - 1st Jeannie Fredenburg with 66, 2nd Anne Schwartz with 69 and 3rd Thelma Koda with 78. The next CCWGC major tournament is the Memorial scheduled for February. To play in the Memorial all members must have participated in ten Tuesday play days during the nine months preceding the event. Joyce Brown, Tournament Chair
ACES OF THE MONTH AND MOST IMPROVED PLAYER
Congratulations to September Aces of the Month, Kendelle Lynch from the Green Tees with a 71 and Jeannie Fredenburg from the Red Tees with a 70.
Congratulations to Nancy Bassett, CCWGC's most improved player for the month of September. Nancy's handicap went from a 26 to a 23, a decrease of 10.3%.
ANNUAL DUES
The annual dues of $70 for the year 2007 are payable on November 1 or as soon as possible after that date, and ARE PAYABLE DIRECTLY TO THE CCWGC. The checks, made out to CCWGC, are payable to Sue Ellen Tankersley, as Treasurer. In her absence, Barbara Bell or I would be happy to receive them and we'll pass them on. Dues for 2007 are the same as 2006 - The ladies club will then send $20 of that $70 to the SD County for annual IDC membership fees, and the remaining $50 is for our ladies' club activities. Any other fees/dues etc. can be paid directly to Larry at the Castle Creek Country Club. Thanks.
Nancy Bassett, Membership
