The Circle R Round-Up - June 2005 |
Manager’s Report
I have been asked by several of our club members and adjacent homeowners to provide an overview on the status of the proposed housing development and clubhouse renovation. Our development team, Rick Tarbell, Taylor Woodrow, and I presented the first land plan approximately a week ago to board members of the surrounding home owner groups. There were several concerns raised at this meeting such as:
- Traffic
- Parking for the golf course
- Parking for the residential units
- Density-number of units
- Open space throughout the project
- Bus stop on Circle R Drive
- View of future buildings from the Treasures development
- View from Circle R Way
- Emergency vehicle access
- Relocation of Circle R Barn
As a result of these concerns a revised land plan is being completed. We want to continue to schedule periodic meetings to receive our feedback and create a plan that is acceptable to the three communities. We promise you that we will not submit any revised plans tothe county without first showing the plans to our members and residents. Rick has encouraged me to pass on his phone number and email address so he can respond directly to any other questions or comments. Rick can be reached at 714-972-1224 or by email at rtarbell@tarbell.com. I can be reached at 760-749-2877 or lmtgc@yahoo.com.
There will be several more community meetings since the planning process will take approximately 18 months. The most recent approval by the Valley Center Planning Group was not an approval of the current development plan but rather the approval of the planning process. As part of the community meetings, we will also be presenting to you plans for the revised clubhouse, the development of a unique putting green and the development of a community pool. As always I will make myself available to meet with anyone who wants to further discuss the project .

Oh’s Tee Shots
As we finally enter the warmer weather of spring and summer, the race between Bent grass and Poa Annua starts heating up. The Bent comes out of a slight dormancy from under the Poa base and will attempt to stake its’ claim as the #1 turf on our greens. The battle, however, is a difficult one. The average seed base of the Poa grass in a square inch area isover 4,000 seeds! So, needless to say, we have to help the Bent out by constantly over seeding our greens for the next 6 months. When you see the small cuts and dusting of sand, you’ll know we are over seeding with Bent. In addition, we put Poa seed retardants called Proxy and Primo that will help tremendously. This springtime practice, along with our Sulphur Burner, will go a long ways toward preparing our greens for the dog days of summer.
The new tee areas on #15 and 17 are coming along nicely and should be ready to use by early May. Our next project will be the renovation of #6 white tee. You’ll note that we increased the fairway width of #6 to make this very difficult hole a “wee” bit easier to play. Future work includes the cleaning up of the creek area off #12 to increase the playing area, as well as to simplify a complicated rules environment.

“Name That Lake”
We are having a contest this month to name the lakes on #7 and #14. The winners will receive a dinner for 2 at our View Restaurant. You can submit your nominations via email at lmtgc@yahoo.com or by dropping them off at the office. We’ll announce the winners in next month’s Roundup.

President’s Message
Having no real words of wisdom this month I thought I would pass on a little bit of history. For many years golf balls were made from wood, but in the early 17 th century feather balls were introduced and were hailed as an advance. These balls consisted of boiled feathers that were compressed through a hole left in pieces of stitched leather that composed the cover. For stuffing in the feathers a wooden tool was first used, after which the stuffing iron had to complete the job. When the leather case was crammed beyond increase, the hole was stitched up, the ball hammered and made as round as possible, and then painted white. The whole process was so slow that the maker did well to finish four in a day, so they cost as much as five shillings each. Although the “feathery” could be hit a long way, it became sodden and disabled in wet weather and was destroyed by hacks from iron clubs, so the balls were short lived as well as expensive. One of the objects of golf is not just to win. It is to play like a gentleman, and win.

Castle Creek Women’s Golf Club By-Law Changes
Proposed changes to the current by-laws will be posted in the scoring room during the month of May. Please read them and be prepared to vote at the June 7th general meeting.

Handicap
The San Diego County Women’s Golf Association spent 2 days during the week of April 11th re-rating Castle Creek for the women’s tees. Dorothy Berger and I observed (and helped) with the re-rating process and found it quite comprehensive and detailed. Larry Taylor was a gracious host and provided lunch for the group both days. The new slope rating, effective May 1st is 131 for the red tees, and 116 for the green tees. With the higher slope ratings, our handicaps will be slightly higher. As part of the process, all tees will be rated for women. So the black tees will be available to those ladies wanting a challenge! Pam Estes, Chair

Rules
The answers to this weeks golf questions are located on the calendar page.
1. T or F In stroke play the competitor is responsible for the correctness of the score on each hole and the total strokes taken for the round.
2. Part of a ball is within bounds but most of it lies out of bounds. The player may: (A) Not play the ball (B) Play the ball (C) Play the ball if his stance remains within bounds (D) Not play the ball without taking a stroke and distance penalty.
3. T or F In stroke play a player, taking relief from an obstruction, mistakenly drops his ball in the wrong place. He corrects his mistake prior to the next stroke. The player incurs a penalty.
COUPLES
Twenty-four couples participated in the April 14th Couples Tournament hosted by Jeannie Fredenburg and Ray Miller. The game was Sweet & Sour - the best 8 holes and 1 worst hole of each of the partners minus one half of the partners combined handicap. Men played from the white tees and ladies from “modified” red tees. (The red tees were moved to the green tees on barranca holes number 13, 14 and 15.)

Men’s Closest to the Pin Dave Bassett #8
Lady’s Closest to the Pin Jan Salisbury #5
Theshot of the day honor goes to Terri Petrell on hole number 16. Her second shot, heading toward the green, looked great, but was nowhere to be found. After looking high and low for the ball, Jan Salisbury peered into the hole and there was Terri’s ball! Great eagle Terri!
Kendelle Lynch lost some sleep over her memorable tee shot on hole number 17. Her tee shot came to a dead stop where it landed as did the squirrel it hit. Kendelle was dismayed to see the little critter lying on its back with its feet pointed skyward.........but, accidents do happen. Hideki Shimazaki’s humor lifted her spirits when he told her she had gotten a “squirrelie” instead of a birdie and that she could take relief from the burrowing animal.
Compliments to the chef, the banquet director, and all the servers. The lunch was very good, the facility well arranged and the service excellent. A special thank you to Pam and Lee Estes for all their advice, support and help with the tournament.
Ray Miller & Jeannie Fredenburg, April Hosts

Member’s Association (MACC) News
Your Member’s Association held its 85th bi-monthly golf tournament on April 21st. We greeted spring with a “Spring has Sprung” tournament, followed by lunch and awards in the Clubhouse. With the help of a blind draw from Billye Lynch and three “pitch-ins” from the rough for birdies on holes 9, 13 and 14, the team of Dorothy and Marv Berger and Harry Carter garnered first place with a scintillating 103. Followed close behind with a 106 was the team of Dave and Nancy Bassett with Terri and Leon Petrell. Also with a 106 was the tying team of Joyce and Jim Brown together with “We Never Win” Shirley and Ray Ekstrom. Our June 16th Tournament will commemorate Flag Day with a theme of “Rally ‘Round the Flag”. Join us for a fun day of golf followed by lunch. All CC members are invited to join MACC. 3-4 weeks before each tournament we send a flyer either by e-mail or snail mail with the details of our next tournament. You can pick your own partner or team. (Be sure they/he/she agree.) Teams of four are automatically entered in the tournament. Couples are combined into a team of four. Early entries take precedence over later entries. In other words if you don’t have a team get your entry into Ken Smith, our MACC Treasurer, early. If you are a single, find a partner of the opposite sex if possible; otherwise you will be entered into the tournament only when there is an opening. All teams normally consist of two female and two male players. A blind draw will be used for teams that have only three players. If you are interested in joining our Member’s Association please contact either Dorothy Berger or Ken Smith. Harry Carter, Tournament Chairman
