The Circle R Round-Up - August 2005 |

Sue Ellen has sent the following message of hope for the ladies
"Women take heart! Never, say never. There's always next year!" The 7th Annual Mixer hosted by the men on July 13th found the women on the short end of the golf stick. Nevertheless, the 13 distaff pairings battled valiantly, with the early returns showing us dominating. Many of those defeated men grumbled that the women should be playing from the "Blues" not the "Green tees”. However, at the end of the day, we were narrowly defeated. Captain Debi Harlow did a great job preparing the pairings and rallying the troops. She will coach the 2006 team. We vow to "crush" the men next year."
Art offers these words of thanks and encouragement for the Women's Club
“It is with great pleasure that on behalf of the Men’s Club I accept the perpetual Mixer Trophy knowing that it was a given that it would return to the Men’s Club. The ladies put up a fierce battle but true talent prevailed. We of the Men’s Club would like to thank the Women’s Club for their participation and to those who put the event together. With practice and a lot of luck perhaps next year the ladies win the trophy back and I will have to eat crow”. (Editor’s note: “Sorry Art, crow is not on the Castle Creek restaurant menu”)
MIXER REFLECTIONS
What was advertised as “Gals vs. Guys” or the “Mixer” turned into what Sue Ellen so aptly described as “the battle of the sexes”. To start with, the “A” team of the men consisting of Yaple and Taylor were thoroughly “waxed” by the women’s “A” team of Galbraith and Harlow to the tune of 68 to 60. Other A and B team scores were posted and, although the scores were much closer, the Men’s Club fell further behind. By the time the ninth team scores were posted the men were down nine strokes and it was becoming apparent that the women were off to their third straight title. As the women were gleefully rubbing their hands in anticipation of a big win they were unaware that the Men’s Club had a secret weapon in the team of Harlow and Hayes. When their score was posted the men’s club went from nine down to 3 up and held on to win in a photo finish. The men won by an average stroke total of 64.3 to the women’s average stroke total of 65.4. Congratulations to Debi Harlow and Jacquie Galbraith for their net 60 to win the women's better ball contest and to Gale Harlow and Al Hayes for their net 59 to win the men's better ball contest.
Manager's Repot
Fifty years ago, the Circle R Golf Course was building a new nine on the old cattle ranch on the “East 40” of the property. Art Dougherty was finally reaching his dream of bringing 18 holes of championship golf to North San Diego County. This new nine, which is now our front nine, would be completed in early 1956. To celebrate the arrival of our 50th anniversary, we will be launching the inaugural Circle R Cup Tournament and Roundup Dinner on Saturday, September 17. The tournament will be open to all golfers in North San Diego, and designed to showcase our great course while we celebrate its’ history. On Saturday night we will have a Western themed dinner, featuring live music, and even hayrides for the kids. There will be a special Member’s only Circle R Cup that will be awarded to the low man and woman. We plan on making this an annual event, where you would proudly invite guests for a wonderful day at Castle Creek. Please mark the date in your book and be sure to look for the flyer enclosed in your monthly statement for more information.

Oh’s Tee Shots
July’s unexpected hot and humid weather, combined with the native clay and salty well water, weakened our greens’ “immune system “ allowing fungus to attack. The result is the noticeable turf loss and a general yellowing in color. The condition is further exacerbated when the sickly turf pulls up and is “scalped” from the greens mower. We have sprayed a special herbicide that literally coats the blades, protecting them from further damage. In addition, we will be patching the bare areas from sod cultivated from our farm off #1. At press time, the greens were improving noticeably from the treatment. One important point I want to make is that although we have a better PH balance in our water from the new Sulfur Burner, it doesn’t help the soluble organic salts that are naturally in the well water. This will always be a problem for us, particularly in the summer months. By the way, that’s why our lakes are not as clear as they should be. Speaking of lakes, we will be treating them this month with a chemical that will reduce the unsightly scum that is rapidly produced in the hot weather.

News From The View
Effective September 1, we will be open for breakfast lunch and dinner 5 days per week, Tuesday through Saturday and open on Sundays for breakfast and lunch. Dinner hours will be extended to 4:00 - 9:00, with early bird specials in effect between 4:00 and 6:00. In addition, we will be changing our menu slightly, offering more value priced meals. One item that will surely be popular is Take-out Pizza. No more will our neighbors have to drive all the way into Escondido for fresh pizza! Our Neighborhood Diner approach will start off with a bang, as we roll back prices from the “good ole days” at Circle R Resort. Items like Chicken & Dumplings for $6, Prime Rib for $9, and Martinis for $3 will be sure to attract a crowd. We will be sending out special invitations to all our members and guests in the coming weeks.

MEN’S CLUB NEWS
Again I want to thank all of those who participated in the Men and Ladies Club Mixer. Every one appeared to have a good time, and a thanks goes to all who put the tournament together. Some time we lose sight that we are all out here to have fun and we are not playing for the U.S. Open and that golf is just a game even though it is a very frustrating one.
There are a number of items that will affect the men’s club in the future and those will be announced as they occur. Your Board is working hard to make the Men’s Club a good place to be and try to make it compatible to all members.
There will be no Men’s club news in the September Round Up as I will be on vacation for six to eight weeks. We are taking our R.V. and traveling to Canada via Oregon Coast and Washington, from Canada to Montana, Idaho and back home down the eastern side of Oregon. With gas prices the way they are it probably does not sound like a very smart idea, but what the heck they say you only live once and prices most likely will not get any better.
Keep the greens smooth and the fairways green.

MEMBERSHIP
Men’s Club dues will be due in October. I am sure all of you read the articles in the last SCGA Fore magazine that informed us that they are raising their fees by $10. In order for us to maintain the current level of support for Major tournaments, Christmas dinner/dance and other activities in our Club, we must pass this on to the members. Dues will now be $70, still a pretty good deal. The Country Club has graciously agreed to collect the dues for our Club. An extra $70 will be added to your regular Country Club bill for October. This $70 will be given to the Men’s Club. We are saving you the time of writing another check and some of you, the price of a stamp and most of all, making life easier for your poor, hardworking Membership Chairman.
Lee Estes, Membership Chairman
Men’s Senior Interclub League
The Castle Creek Seniors Interclub team played Escondido B and won both at home and away. We lost at El Camino but are looking to get even at home on Friday, July 29th. The league four-ball championship is scheduled for August 15th at Eagle Crest. We are allowed two teams in it and one is ready to give it a go. Any two players, who are interested in participating, talk to Ken Smith to get signed up.
The fall sweeps is scheduled for September 19th at Meadowlake. The sign up sheet will be on the bulletin board in the Club Room. Will Nelson, acting captain
SENIORS
The Seniors Golf Club will hold its end of the month golf tournament on Monday, August 29 followed by lunch in the banquet room. The tournament format is best ball of a twosome. The lunch menu is burger, BBQ beans, and slaw for $10. The tournament will commence with a shotgun start at 7:30. Check in will be between 6:45 and 7:15. Sign up for this great event early. On Labor Day, 5 September, we are planning an individual low net tournament with separate Ladies and Mens divisions. The tournament will be followed by a luncheon (Taco or crispy chicken salad). This tournament is for all Seniors/Mens/Ladies club members. A special holiday rate of $40 vs. the normal $65 will be in effect for all social members thanks to Larry Taylor. Please take advantage of the sign up sheet at the desk in the clubroom so we can plan accordingly. This will be a 7:30 shotgun start. Cost of the tournament will be $3 and the luncheon is $10.

1. A player removes a post defining out of bounds on his line of play. He realizes he has made a mistake and replaces it before playing his next stroke. What is the ruling?
