FIFTY-SIX MEN'S CLUB AND WOMEN'S CLUB MEMBERS GATHER FOR
RULES 101
CASTLE CREEK MEN'S CLUB HOSTS RULES SEMINAR
Most good golfers would like to know all the Rules of Golf. Unfortunately, most of us know some of the Rules and we all acknowledge that understanding everything in that little handbook is a daunting task. On Wednesday the 22nd of August, Jeff Ninnemann was here to give us a little help. Jeff is the Southern California Golf Association (SCGA) Assistant for Rules and Competition and is an active participant in a speaker program provided by the SCGA. While a sumptuous buffet lunch was being served in the seminar arranged banquet room, Jeff covered all the basics and explained some of the Rules with special application to Castle Creek including the more complicated application of the rules as they apply to our hole #7 (this was explained in a recent issue of the Roundup). He emphasized that the Rules of Golf are a continually evolving process (the USGA expects about 111 changes to the Rules of Golf and Decisions for 2008) - that we are all playing under the same rules - and that these rules need to be respected and followed with care.
MEMBER'S ASSOCIATION "RED HOT TAMALE" GOLF TOURNAMENT WAS HOT & CLOSE

On a very hot summer morning, 24 MACC members enjoyed a hotly contested game of golf. The scramble format produced scores that were within less than four strokes of each other for all six of the competing teams. The winning team managed a one-stroke victory over the runner up team of Nancy and Dave Bassett with Joyce and Jim Brown. Dorothy Berger won both closest to the pin for the ladies while Hideki Shimazaki (#5) and John Koda (#8) won for the men. Remember to reserve Thursday, October 25th for the BIG tournament of the year (Special prizes will be awarded). The annual MACC dinner dance will be held the following Saturday, October 27th. The theme for the Saturday evening festivities will be “Here Come The Clowns” so you can be sure it will be a very lively event that you won’t want to miss! Look for details in your MACC flyer to be sent out to all members about mid September.
MANAGER'S REPORT

We are delaying our new Circle R Ranch Restaurant opening as we have been having difficulty in finding the right chef. Please bear with us as we try to find the perfect cook to prepare all the great new items we’ll be offering. You will be receiving a special invitation in the mail to participate in our grand opening festivities. Until then, we’ll be open as usual Thursday through Saturday.
It’s great seeing you all zip around the course in our new carts- what a difference! We will be getting new ball washers later this month that will be placed on all 18 tees. In October, the club will be hosting our first “Board vs. Board” event, designed to honor all the hard working volunteers who make our Men’s, Senior, and Women’s clubs so successful! Larry Taylor. General Manager
OH'S TEE SHOTS

As we all know so well, aerifying our greens is a pain in the “you know what!” Besides making the greens bumpy, the process interrupts your round as well as interrupting the maintenance staff. To make things a little easier, we will be aerifying our greens in the evening. This process not only solves the aforementioned problems, but also is actually healthier for our turf. The greens are dry at this time of the day, which allows a cleaner plug to be removed, as well as makes it much easier to blow off the particles from the green. Aerifying in the evening allows the greens to recover in the cooler night temperatures and gives them a 10-12 hour rest from the golfers. As discussed in previous articles, we plan on using only small tines and a light sand dusting- not the traumatic large tine and heavy sand applications in the past. Tee Oh-Superintendent
SOCIAL MEMBERSHIPS 2008
We will again be billing all our Social Members in October for 2008 membership. This is in conjunction with our Ladies’ and Men’s Club billing practices. If you do not wish to renew, simply ignore the billing and contact Larry Taylor at 760-749-2877 x200, and we’ll credit back your account and drop you off the list for 2008.
AARON'S PRO TIPS - SO WHAT'S A HYBRID?
“Sure I have a 3 iron, it’s collecting dust in my garage right now” With the technological advances with golf clubs today, it’s almost insane to carry long irons anymore. Because hybrids have a center of gravity that is lower accompanied by a larger sweet spot, imperfect shots are easily forgiven. How many times have you hit that perfect shot on #9, #11, #17 or #18 only to watch it come up short. With what a hybrid offers, that shot would have gotten in the air much easier and carried that distance to green. I have stocked the pro shop this month with a large order of hybrids to allow your game to “go to that next level”. Great news is that I have selected a couple of companies that offer a tremendous product at 50% - 75% of the prices that Taylormade or Callaway sell their products at. If you’re supposed to hit down on the ball with your irons and slightly up on the ball with your woods, what in the world do you do with a hybrid club? The key to swinging a hybrid correctly is to look at what club(s) the hybrid has replaced. (An 18-degree replaces a 3 iron; 24 degree replaces a 4 iron and so on) Because most hybrids are designed to be iron replacements, I advise golfers to swing them like they would their middle-irons. As such, remember that it’s not necessary to try and scoop the ball upward (as many feel they have to do with low-lofted irons). Instead, allow the low and deep CG to work its magic and launch the ball at a high and optimal angle. The trick? Don’t be afraid to swing down and through as you would with a mid- or long- iron. Finally, swing with a moderate tempo and remember to hit down on the ball. As for those long irons? Kiss ‘em goodbye! Aaron Kelsey, Director of Golf
MEN’S CLUB NEWS
As we enter the fall months, your Board of Directors will be busy with many tasks, which include membership update, general meeting for elections, and By-Laws/Men's Club Handbook changes. As always, the most important and time-consuming task is the membership update. We need your full cooperation to accomplish this in a timely fashion. Lee Estes will be asking you to update your profile - address, phone number, and e-mail address. This information is needed for your SCGA membership and also to provide you with prompt, up-to-date information regarding the activities of your club and for updating the roster information in the Men’s Club Handbook and the Castle Creek Country Club Directory. In addition, your annual dues will become due. Please respond promptly to Lee so that there will be no need for phone calls or any other type of needless follow-up. John Lizotte, President

TRAVELING TEAM
A team consisting of Fred Holtermann, Will Nelson, Ron Williams, Ed Harbour, Clell Ward and Gayle Harlow challenged a group from Fallbrook on July 20th and came away with a nice 10 to 8 win. The low net score from our team was Clell Ward's 72. When this same group hosted Fallbrook the following Thursday the 26th, the visitors pretty much handed us our heads!! We lost by a score of 15 to 3 but Clell Ward came through again with the low score of 69
On Tuesday the 30th, the team of Ken Smith, Bud Barnes, Hal Helfand, Charlie Newcomb, Dan Albee, and Jim Brown visited Balboa and ran into a buzz saw. They lost by a score of 15 to 3. There was one ‘At A Boy” given to Jim Brown for his outstanding net 68 score. The A team of Smith and Barnes were treated to a sound thumping (0 to 6). When Balboa came here on Thursday August 9th our local team won by the score of 18 to 0. Charlie Newcomb led the winning effort with a net 66 and Ken Smith added support with a net 68.
Our team for the Miramar match consisted of George Steiner, Hideki Shimazaki, Hal Helfand, Jim Brown, Clell Ward, and John Buerfeind. We managed a split decision down there on the 17th of August but got scorched up here on the 23rd by the score of 12 to 6. Hal Helfand, returning from hip surgery, posted the best net score of 66 and was supported by the net of 68 recorded by Jim Brown.

RULES IN PICTURES

It looks like Jack has a rock between his ball and the green. The rock is an imbedded impediment (unless you are Tiger) and it interferes with his swing. How does Jack proceed? He may play the ball where it lay. He may deem his ball unplayable (penalty one stroke) and drop within two club lengths of the position of his ball. He may use any club in his bag to measure the two club lengths. Or, under penalty of one stroke he may play a ball as nearly as possible at the spot from which the original ball was last played. Or, under penalty of one stroke he may drop a ball behind the point where the ball lay, keeping that point directly between the hole and the spot on which the ball is dropped with no limit to how far behind that point the ball may be dropped.
WOMEN'S CLUB NEWS
August has been a very busy month. On the 7th the CCWGA hosted the SMWGA team play. The team play bumped out the regular ladies’ day golf; our apologizes to those who had to sit out that day. Again, thanks to Dorothy Berger, Thelma Koda, Jane Knowles and Billye Lynch who spend the day in the hot sun being spotters on holes #14 and #16. That was very much appreciated. The men’s club hosted a rules workshop on the 22nd and invited the ladies club to join in for the lunch and seminar. Jeff Ninnemann from the SCGA was most informative and the 14 ladies who attended gained a lot of knowledge on the rules of golf. We thank the men’s club for including us. The month concluded with the 2 week Individual Eclectic major tournament. Congrats to Joyce Brown who won low net over the field. Now on to Sept. we have a fun sweeps day on the first Tuesday. We will ‘battle’ the pros in Beat the Pro day. It’s never too early to plan, so we remind all that on October 2nd the annual Rally for Cure will take place. Plan your foursome and come out to support a very worthy cause. Hanalei Sun is doing a great job chairing this event. Still somewhat off in the distant future, but again, not too early to plan, please mark your calendar for the 15th of November. This is the date of the 2nd annual Viejas Casino and Outlet day trip. This year’s fundraiser will also donate a portion of the proceeds to the Escondido Chapter of Elizabeth Hospice. BTW: Our very own Monita Patry volunteers her time to Elizabeth Hospice in addition to her valuable time being our SDCWGA delegate and team captain for SMWGA. She golfs here and at other clubs where she is also active in different posts. You are one awesome lady! The price is still $10 per person. A true bargain for a day of fun! Contact Barbara Bell or Cookie Johnson to list yourself. Barbara Bell, President
INDIVIDUAL ECLECTIC

On August 21, probably the hottest day of the month, twenty-two ladies made their way for the first week of a two-week contest. The ever present thought of "oh, well, I'll do better next week" is always in the back of the mind, however, with the weather factor, it was obvious by the end of the first day that the majority of players would be looking forward to the 28th. Weather wise, the second week wasn't much better, but it appears that somewhere in the first week some good scores were made and by adjusting the second week, the results were better. Our winner put a good back on the 21st with a good front on the 28th. That overall low net winner is Joyce Brown with a 63. First flight winners are: Debi Harlow-66, Vao Scanlan-67, and Irene Fedeli-69. Second flight winners are: Jan Salisbury-65, Monita Patry-66, and Barbara Bell and Fumie Shimazaki tied at 70. Third flight winners are: Ruth Hazel-64, Anitra Gherke-68, and Jeannie Fredenburg-70. Worth mentioning is the unusual tactic of Mary O'Brien on the sixth hole. Probably something she can't repeat. As she was hitting her fourth shot to the green she hit the overhead wires. Local rules say this must be replayed. Bingo! She did it again. Another replays, but this time she hit within 12 inches of the flagstick and easily scored her par. Dorothy Berger, Publicity
SANTA MARGARITA TEAM PLAY
Our Santa Margarita team played their second match on 8/7 here at Castle Creek on a sizzling hot day. With team uniforms contributing to a colorful field, the matches teed off with a shotgun start at 8AM. Our team lost net by 11 points, but gained in overall standings. The winning CC team with the most gross points was Irene Fedeli and Debi Harlow with 11 points of 18; the winning CC team with the most net points was Joyce Brown and Monita Patry with 11 1/2 points of 18. On 8/27 the team journeyed to Morgan Run to play a match against Escondido CC. The team lost net by only 5 points, but gained in overall standing in net to 3rd place. Go Team! Using a new system of combining gross and net scores, the winning CC team was Hanalei Sun and Barbara Bell; a second place tie was Irene Fedeli/Debi Harlow and Jan Salisbury/Monita Patry. Team captain Monita Patry has posted results on the team board. Keep watching for future matches and our overall position. Dorothy Berger, Publicity
ACES OF THE MONTH
The lady's club golfers turned in some terrific scores during July and August. July Red Tee Ace of the Month, Lynne Cardarelli, shot a sizzling net 62, while Dee Dowling, July Green Tee Ace, had a superb net score of 68. Jan Salisbury and Joyce Brown tied for August Red Tee Ace of the Month with an outstanding net 67, while Jane Knowles captured August Green Tee Ace of the Month honors with a net 72. Congratulations to you all! Jeannie Fredenburg
For the month of August, the most improved lady golfer is Dawn Jessee. Her handicap went from 23 to 21 (a decrease of 11.4%). Congratulations, Dawn. Pam
