ALAN AURET NEW MEN'S CLUB CHAMPION
STEVE GJORKOVSKI TAKES SECOND FOR THIRD STRAIGHT YEAR

alanauret

After three rounds in the new Wednesday-Monday-Wednesday Championship tournament format, Alan Auret emerged as the 2007 Men’s Club Champion with a final score of 227.  Steve Gjorkovski, for the third straight year, was the runner-up followed by Dennis Goode in third place.  "B" Flight winner was Jim Santospirito followed by Jim Brown and Dan Albee.  Marv Berger took "C" Flight with Charlie Newcomb and Harry Carter tied for second.  Alan is one of our newer members.  He hails from South Africa where, as a youngster, he learned to golf as a junior golfer at Poolok golf course.  Later he honed his golfing skills as a member of the Durban Country Club, a prestigious South Africa golfing venue, where John Daly owns the course record with a 62.  Other golf notables that Alan rubbed elbows with at the South Africa Open were Phil Mickleson, and fellow South Africans, Ernie Els and Rory Sabbatini.  Alan arrived in California in 2001, moved to Fallbrook in 2005 and early this year decided that the highly rated golf course at Castle Creek Country Club was the place for him.  Welcome aboard Alan!  We are very pleased to have you as a member and as our Club Champion.  Alan will play as a partner with Larry Taylor against the Women’s Club Champion and runner-up in the July 11 Men’s Club/Women’s Club annual mixer.  He is also eligible to play in the SCGA "Tournament of Champions" Tournament scheduled for December.

Ladies' Club Guest Day

ladiesday ladiesday2
With the colorful theme of "Salute to Our Military", there was red, white, and blue everywhere, plus a few olive drab fatigues.  Seventy-six ladies participated in a two best ball shamble, with at least half of them being guests from surrounding courses in San Diego County.  True to the theme, the four flights were Army, Air Force, Marine Corps, and Navy, with five foursomes in most flights.  The sunny day started with an ample continental breakfast.  The beverage before tee time and iced drinks at the turn were provided by management. The day ended with lunch and prizes.  Happily, everyone was a winner.  Congratulations to all the players; a big "thank you" to all the volunteer workers and the one active duty military guest, Sgt. Janet Burgess, U.S. Army, granddaughter of member Chris Peterson.

Manager’s Report
Even though our golf membership is currently at capacity, we are still offering Social Memberships.  The cost to join is now reduced for the year to $170.  Benefits include membership to our men’s or ladies’ clubs and discounts on golf, merchandise, and dinners.  Both our clubs are seeking new members - so please help us grow by inviting your friends to join!
Our full golf members are reminded that kids and grandchildren can play free golf anytime after 3:00 PM provided they are playing with the member.  Remember, this is available to Full Golf Members only.  This is our way to help the future of the game of golf as well as to add value to your membership!  Larry Taylor- General Manager

Oh’s Tee Shots
With summer rapidly approaching, the winter grasses such as rye and poa annua start dying out and be replaced with Bermuda and, on some areas, Kikuyu.  This transition causes an occasional brown spot in our fairways and roughs.  This problem will soon disappear as the warmer night temperatures facilitate strong Bermuda and Kikuyu growth.  The rye grass we planted on the fringe should stay with us all summer due to the heavy irrigation on our greens.  The poa annua, like the rye, will continue to grow (along with the Bent) on our greens, as long as the root temperatures do not reach over 100 degrees.  When this happens, we start to lose our greens.  Some of the preventive measures we institute include aeration (no sand) to improve root depth, higher mowing height to create a canopy, and afternoon syringing to cool off surface temperatures.  We are hopeful that we will be able to sustain strong turf quality throughout the summer.  Tee Oh- Superintendent

AARON’S CORNER -  PRO TIPS
Putting is such a vital component of shooting low scores.  It makes no sense to me to take 2 shots to go 400 yards and 3 putts to go 20 feet.  Remember, the Pro that wins on Sunday is always the one that putts the best.  Here are 3 keys to get you started.
1 - Check your fundamentals - Get your eyes over the ball or just inside the target line - rock your shoulders with no breakdown in the wrists-keep the lower half completely still-and most importantly.....keep your head still!! Do not look up until the ball has left the putter head.  On short putts, listen for the ball to fall into the cup.  2 - Consistent tempo in your stroke - Have a constant pace to your stroke both back and through.  Purchase a pocket-sized metronome (I use one made by Eyeline Golf).  Find a rhythm that suits your stroke, and putt to that beat.  Make your backstroke and follow-thru the same length.  To help with this, take your stance, place the ball in the middle, and putt the width of your stance.  Short putts narrow stance, long putts wide stance.  3 - Speed, not line, is the most important element of great putting.  Most every 3-putt is the result of distance, but rarely way left or right.  Controlling the pace of your stroke and varying the length is the most reliable way to learn feel on the greens.  My suggestion to make aiming easy is to draw a line on the ball and point it at your target line as you mark your ball.  Once you have done this, line your putter head up perpendicular to the line, and focus solely on speed.  Never second guess your line, trust it and it will pay big dividends on the greens and your scorecard.  Aaron Kelsey,  Director of Golf

A warm CCCC welcome to Darrin Burnworth

MEN'S CLUB NEWS
John Lizotte is basking in the sun in Hawaii so, in his absence, I will do his column.  He asked me to express his thanks to all the volunteers (Art, Fred, Gale, Hideki, Jim, Ken, Sam and Warren) who showed up to help the Women’s Cub with their Member-Guest Tournament.  All of that bag toting, picture taking and scoring was much appreciated by the ladies.
During the latter part of June a sign up sheet for the annual Women’s Club/Men’s Club Mixer will be posted on the desk.  All Men's Club members are invited to play in this Better Ball Tournament scheduled for July 11.  Pick your partner (8 strokes maximum difference).  All Men’s Club members who participate may attend the Awards luncheon.  It is anticipated that Allan Auret with Larry Taylor will be paired with The Women’s Club Champion and Runner-up to lead off this fun filled event.  Harry Carter, Special Events Chairman

 RULES

Course Boundary’s and Markings:  We have had several changes in our course markings recently.
Hole #8 - The new footbridge is part of the Habitat protected area and is so marked.  Hole #12 - The Out of Bounds markers on the right side of the fairway now include the white property stakes and ropes which run along the property line but technically belong to the HOA.  Hole #12 - The lateral water hazard markers on the right side of the fairway about 100 yards from the green have been removed and don*t start up again until about 50 yards from the green.  Hole #16 - The screen on the far right side of the hole just before the sand trap is now marked as out of bounds.  See "Rules in Pictures" below.
A more complete explanation of these changes will be placed on the Men’s Club BB.  Please read.  Ken Smith, Rules Chairman

Travel Team
A team consisting of Ken Smith, Bud Barnes, George Steiner, Hal Helfand, Clell Ward, and Charley Newcomb played at Coronado on Friday April 27th.  The match was closely contested but the Castle Creek group won by a score of 10 to 8.  The rematch was held here on Thursday May 3rd.  Our local boys came thru again with a victory by the score of 11 to 7.  The “A” team and the “C” team again contributed the most.  Both groups won their matches by a score of 5 to 1, thereby accounting for 10 of the 11 points won.  A team consisting of Fred Holtermann, Will Nelson, Hideki Shimazaki, John Lizotte, Charley Newcomb, and John Buerfeind played at Meadow Lake on Friday May 11th.  It was a most frustrating day since the guys took a serious beating, losing the match by a score of 17 to 1.  Meadow Lake played here for the rematch on the following Thursday.  Although our local players managed a better showing, they still got whipped by a score of 11 to 7.  There were no "At A Boys” recorded but both Will Nelson and Fred Holtermann came close with their net 70's.  Ken Smith, Team Captain

Rules in Pictures

rulesin
As mentioned elsewhere on this page, new OB stakes have been placed along the net to the right of the green on hole #16.  As you can see, Ken has found himself barely in bounds but the net interferes with his back swing.  Does Ken get a drop without penalty because of interference from a man made obstruction?  The answer is “yes” if the net is inbounds.  (Rule 24-2)  The answer is “no” if the net is out of bounds (any object that is out of bounds is not an "obstruction" and therefore no relief is afforded).  The net by itself does not delineate the out of bounds boundary - only the white stakes do this.  Depending upon wind conditions and other factors, the net may billow into bounds or it may billow out of bounds.  Consult with your opponent and be very careful in determining the position of the net before deciding to provide yourself with relief from an obstruction (the net).

WOMEN’S CLUB NEWS

“Salute to the Military” Member/Guest day has come and gone.  Thank you to Nancy Bassett who offered to chair this year”s event.  Also, there are a few people to acknowledge for being instrumental in putting the event together.  Thanks to Jane Knowles who designed the invitations.  Thanks to Shirley Ekstrom who took charge of the tee hole sponsors and thanks to Jeannie Fredenburg who wore many hats to complete many of the tasks.  Once again Marion Smith showed her creativity with her work on the decorations.  What would we do without her!  Of course, thanks as well to her army of helpers such as Chris Peterson, Dorothy Berger, Yvonne Buerfeind, Betty Witty, and Kendelle Lynch.  Jan Salisbury and Vao Scanlon worked hard to put on a great shamble game that all enjoyed.  Thanks to all who donated to the raffle prizes. Mary O’Brien was in Hawaii celebrating the big Five O but generously gave a $50 gift card to Nordstrom for the raffle.  Mahalo Mary! And another mahalo to Hanalei Sun for the $25 money flag. Many of the ladies provided wonderful raffle prizes.  Thanks to all who brought goodies for the continental breakfast. Thank you Tee Oh for giving us a beautiful and in great condition golf course.  All the guests had positive comments about the course and we may have even gained 2 new members.  Thank you Larry Taylor, Cookie Johnson, and Aaron Kelsey for all the help to get the “show on the road”.  Thank you to the men’s club for being the “bag boys”.  We saw you all out there working hard.  Thank you John Lizotte and Ken Smith for scoring the game.  Thanks to Warren Tankersley for being our photographer again.  We appreciate your time and effort in getting photos of all the 4somes.  Dorothy Berger also took some good pictures during the luncheon.  Thanks to all who donated time, money, and energy. It is much appreciated and all had a fun day..oorah!!!  Barbara Bell, President
