The Circle R Round-Up - July 2007 |
CASTLE CREEK WOMEN'S CLUB CROWNS 2007 CHAMPION
IRENE FEDELI REPEATS AS CASTLE CREEK WOMEN*S CLUB CHAMPION

June 12 marked the first day of a three-week competition for the 2007/2008 Club Championship. Sixteen worthy competitors arrived early on a beautiful day to make their way through the first 18 of the 54 holes. Defending champion Irene Fedeli was among the field. Special efforts were made by management to ensure the best of playing conditions. By the end of round one Irene led by two strokes with several other contenders close behind. At the end of play on the second week Pam Estes had closed the gap and was only one stroke behind the leader. The final round was closely contested. Mary O'Brien made a run at the leader posting a tournament best 86, however, Irene slowly pulled away from the pack finishing with a 280 for the tournament, six strokes ahead of her nearest competitors. Pam along with Mary O’Brien and Vao Scanlon tied for the runner-up spot, each with a 286. (See other scores on page 4)
MEMBER'S ASSOCIATION OPENS SUMMER GOLF WITH ANOTHER CLOSE ONE

We knew before the tournament started that the game of the day would bring in some low scores but we didn’t realize how low and how many. For the second consecutive tournament this year the first six teams (out of eight) were highly competitive. Only 4 strokes separated the first team from the sixth place team. The team of Jane and Sam Knowles with Fumie and Hideki Shimazaki were the winners with a net 49. The team of Jan Salisbury with Ken Smith and Kendelle and Art Lynch came in with a score of 50 and took second place. Only two strokes behind the leaders in a tie for third were Pam and Lee Estes with Marv Berger and Ruth Hazel and the team of Mara Lee Ashworth, Dan Albee with Ellie and Harry Carter.
Manager's Report
I am happy to report that we will be acquiring 75 new Club Cars to replace our fleet with shiny new ones. The new Club Cars will be both more powerful and more energy efficient- a good combination! This change over will occur ion late July or early August, depending on Club Car's assembly time. The cars will be the same sand color, and will carry our Castle Creek logo.
On a similar note, we will be acquiring a new greens mower, which will contain the latest and greatest in modern mowing technology. This will result in a sharper, cleaner cut, resulting in smoother and faster greens. Look for the new machine sometime in early July! Larry Taylor-General Manager
NOTICE: The Castle Creek Membership Roster is available for pick up in the Office.
Oh's Tee Shots
I've got good news for all you golfers who hate the aeration of our greens! We have decided to implement a new process in which we will punch our greens with a smaller, less invasive hole on a monthly basis. These smaller holes heal quickly and can be putted on immediately after aeration with no noticeable difference in ball roll. After the aeration, we'll lightly dust the green with the proper amendments that will wash into the green within a day or so. As mentioned, this is a new process that we'll be evaluating each month. We may still have to resort to the larger holes, but our hope and intent is to use this process. Tee Oh- Superintendent
AARON'S CORNER - PRO TIPS
Consistency is the Key to any Effective Pre-Shot Routine
If you look at the best players in the PGA Tour and they all have tremendous and dedicated pre-shot routines. There are all styles and triggers, but the one thing they all have in common is that they site down their target line first to establish their target. You really need to be target oriented and the only way to do it is to establish the target from behind the ball. You want to be able to visualize the shot you're trying to hit. Then you walk into your shot and put the clubface down behind the ball and point it towards the target. When practicing you need an intermediate target to focus on. Take a club shaft and put it in the ground about 5-10 feet in front of the ball. Point your clubface at the club shaft and then step into the shot with your body parallel to the target line. You want your feet, knees, hips, shoulders, and your eyes parallel to the target line. Target alignment is absolutely necessary for all golf shots. Once you setup to the ball, you want to create a routine that will allow you to relax, once you find it Stick with it!! Tension will kill your golf swing if you let it. It will cause you to make swings that just aren't very effective. As the great players setup and grip the club, they're always in motion. They will waggle the club head to take tension out of their wrists and arms. Or they might move their feet or even their eyes back and forth between the target and the ball. I don't care if you are reading the green or getting ready to hit the driver. Staying loose is part of what a good pre-shot routine is all about. Aaron Kelsey, Director of Golf
The Castle Creek Inn is now open!

Just in time for summer! We have complete facilities - spa, hot soaking pools, large swimming pool, fitness center and of course “The View” restaurant and bar next door at the Country Club.
In celebration of Paul Walton’s 10th anniversary as owner of Castle Creek Inn, we are offering all of our neighbors and golfers an unbelievable $99 special Sunday through Thursday rate, now through August (excluding holidays and based on availability).
Men’s Club News
The “Mixer”, an annual Tournament featuring players from the Women’s Club and the Men’s Club, is scheduled for Wednesday the 11th of July. The format will be a better ball stroke play match consisting of four players in each group, each composed of a two women better ball team and a two men better ball team. The first group to tee off will be the Women’s Club Champion and runner-up and the Men’s Club Champion and our General Manager, Larry Taylor. At the present time it looks like we will have more than 60 members playing in this festive event. The “Mixer” is open to all members of the Castle Creek Women’s and Men’s Clubs. Entries will close on July 5th so, if you haven’t done so already, enter on the sign-up sheet in the clubroom before that date. Arrangements for paying for this event and the awards lunch to follow must be made prior to that date. Details of this event are posted in the clubroom.
Castle Creek Traveling Team
A group of 6 men (Myron Vanetsky, Art Lynch, George Steiner, John Lizotte, Dan Albee and Jim Brown) drove down to the Sycuan Resort on Friday, June 22nd for our 13th match of the current season. The Sycuan team is only a few points out of first place in the League and our team ran into a buzz saw, losing the match by the embarrassing score of 18 to 0! All of their team members shot net scores in the low 70 and high 60 range. None of our team members achieved an “At A Boy”. The locals came home with smiling faces, however, due to the hospitality extended to them by the host team, the excellent condition of the course and the outstanding meal served at lunch.
The rematch played here at home on Thursday, June 28th resulted in a better score (13 to 5) but the home team still finished second. Several of the team scored exceptionally well in the losing effort - George Steiner a 64 net, Myron Vanetsky a 68 net and John Lizotte a net of 69. All three will receive special recognition with “At A Boys” awarded.
The next match will be played against San Vicente on July 6th (there) and July 12th (here).
The Summer Sweeps will be held at El Camino Country Club on July 23rd. At this writing Castle Creek has a team of 7 players who plan to attend: Will Nelson - Charles Newcomb - Myron Vanetsky - Frank Betonte - Ed Harbour -Warren Tankersley and Ron Williams. For the very reasonable fee of $50.00, each player receives a continental breakfast, 18 holes of golf with cart, lunch, and a chance to share in multiple prizes (largely underwritten by the League.)
The winning 4-man team usually wins about $80.00 each with 2nd thru 6th place scaled down accordingly from that number.
Ken Smith, Team Captain, Castle Creek Traveling Team
Rules in Pictures

The out of bounds area on hole 16 has been changed to alleviate the confusion that existed with the moving position of the net caused by wind. As you can see in the photo at the left, the net and the net poles are now in bounds. They have now become an obstruction and appropriate relief is afforded if the net or one of the poles interferes with your stance or your swing. Please read rule 24-2.
WOMEN’S CLUB NEWS
Here are a few reminders of upcoming events. Plans are in the works for the Mixer slated for Wed., July 11th. Please have your $10.00 fee to Cookie within the next few days. August 21st and 28th will be the last major tournament of the year. It will be the 2-week Individual Eclectic. Look for the sign up sheet, which should be posted after the Mixer. As you travel on and around the golf course and see something that needs tending to, please email Larry Taylor with your concerns. He is most interested in hearing from all of us in matters that need improvement. Happy summer to all. Stay cool out there! Barbara Bell, President

Congratulations to the first runner-ups for the Club Championship - Mary O'Brien, Pam Estes, and Vao Scanlon. All of you helped to provide an exciting finish to a memorable Castle Creek Club Championship Tournament! Congratulations also to the first place winners in each flight who are: Flight 1 Debi Harlow with a 233 net, Flight 2 Jan Salisbury with a 223 net and Flight 3 Joyce Brown with a 313 gross and Anne Schwartz with a 225 net. A big thanks to all others who participated. Dorothy Berger, Publicity
June Aces of the Month
Mary O'Brien, a first time Red Tee Ace of the Month winner, shot a superb net score of 62 on the last day of the Women's Club Championship. Mary also broke 90 for the first time with a score of 86! Claiming the Green Tee Ace of the Month title was Jane Mullen, with a terrific net score of 65. Congratulations to both ladies on your outstanding accomplishments! Jeannie Fredenburg
Most Improved

For the month of June, the most improved lady golfer is Mary O'Brien. Her handicap decreased by two strokes from a 24 to a 22. Good golfing, Mary!! We won't be surprised if she isn't the most improved next month too after a fine round of 86 on June 25th. Pam Estes
The CC Ladies Club is pleased to welcome new member Joy Johnson, whom Monita Patry recruited from Twin Oaks in May. Joy played at CC with the ladies on May 29, and we really enjoyed seeing those long drives of hers. Her handicap at Twin Oaks is around 18, and she's a lot of fun to play with, so I know everyone will enjoy having her in their foursome. Joy has been out of town for a month or so, but looks forward to starting with us around the first of August Pam
Goodbye Betty!

Betty Wood, long time member, has moved to Albuquerque at the urging of her son and daughter, who live there. Betty has been a familiar face, most recently handling putts and closest to the pin, both last year and half of this year. She has been a member of Santa Margarita almost since its inception. She was a ferocious competitor in team play. She was our own club president in 1987/88 and she was the first to volunteer where needed in the following years. Her forte was Rules and she could be counted on to straighten us out when we went astray. She has been on the board of directors almost every year in some capacity and her accomplishments are endless. While we will miss her we can only wish her all the happiness she so richly deserves. Buddy Jan will soon be posting her address, so let's go for a shower of greetings. Dorothy Berger, Publicity
