   The Circle R Round-Up - Jan 2008

GOODBYE 2007 - HELLO 2008

MEMBER’S ASSOCIATION PLAYS FINAL GAME OF THE YEAR

Final Game 2007

Thirty-two members teed up for the last game of a very successful 2007 golf tournament and social year.  Once again the “Ambrose” scramble format was used with one small change.  In order to lessen the opportunity for one player to dominate the team, the player whose ball was chosen had to “step aside” for the next shot.  The results were encouraging.  Only 5.9 strokes separated the first place team from the last.  Most any team could have one the contest with just a little bit of luck and a few more putts that would have dropped instead of lipping out.  Tied for first place with a score of 55.2 were the team of Fumie and Hideki Shimazaki with Cookie Johnson and John Lizotte and the team of Barbara and Don Bell with Jan and Hugh Salisbury.  All alone in third place with a score of 56.2 was Kendelle and Art Lynch with Margo and Walt Krstich.  Jeannie Fredenburg, Mary Allen, Ken Smith, and Dave Bassett had the hot stick for closest to the pin. Tuscany Pavers San Diego offers installation on paving stones and paver bricks.

MEN'S CLUB 2007 FINALE

Men's Club Finale Men's Club Finale Len

Men's Club Finale Dance

More than sixty members and guests crowded the banquet room celebrating the Castle Creek (formerly Circle R) Men’s Club forty-fifth annual Christmas Party.  The four-member combo “Just Friends” provided music for those inclined to hoof it.  We were honored to have two of our former members with us as guests of Will Nelson; Len Kidon, who retired from golf last year but is still a man of a thousand jokes, and 93 years young Al Hayes.  Not only was Al a member of the Men’s Club for some twenty-five years but he was also celebrated as the Immigration officer who walked into a bar and put the cuffs on the infamous gangster, Lucky Luciano.

OH'S TEE SHOTS

As we say good-bye to 2007 and welcome in 2008, I’d like to let you know what are projects will be for the upcoming year.  They are as follow: 1.  Continue to clean out the barrancas.  2. Add sand to green side bunkers.  3. Continue our tree trimming. 4. Renovate tees that have become uneven through the years.  I’d like to say thanks to all our members and guests who have been so patient when we have frost delays.  The extra hour or so that we wait makes a big difference when it comes to maintaining our greens and fairways.

AARON'S PRO TIPS

Frosty Morning

Well it’s the holiday seasons again and I have a million wives asking me what the best gift for their husband’s can be.  My most delivered answer was a gift certificate; hopefully everybody gets something that they were wishing for or at least the means to receive it.
I do know that it is getting colder and the wonderful frost delays are upon us, be sure to stretch out as much as you can in this down time waiting for Mother Nature to agree with us.  It’s very common to sit down and do nothing but drink coffee, immediately jumping on our assigned tee box with little or no real preparation.  So, remember when we step on that tee for the first couple of holes, take your time, and ensure solid contact as the utmost priority.
I hope everyone has an exciting holiday and receives all they ask for from Santa.  Aaron Kelsey, Director of Golf

#2 OLD OAK FALLS

Old Oak Falls

Old age and over watering took its’ toll on the Oak tree next to #2 green last month.  Unfortunately golf courses and oak trees are not compatible.  Oaks thrive in dry conditions and become weakened when their “feet” stay wet.  This tree is estimated to be 100 years or so.  We are trying to keep our oaks alive as long as possible by establishing the bark areas under the canopy to reduce the watering along the trees

HOLE IN ONE FOR OUR DAVES!

Congratulations to Dave McCollum and Dave Bassett, who each had aces this past month.  Dave McCollum aced #15 last month with his trusty 5 wood. Dave Bassett aced #15 with a 6 iron.  It was Dave’s first ace in 70 years!!  Sometimes good things happen to people who are patient!

MEN’S CLUB NEWS

We have a busy tournament schedule for 2008.  The annual Hot Stick in January and the Sweeps in June require pre-qualification but neither will require an entry fee.  If you have entered the Hot Stick in the past year and have recorded a net 68 or less you are eligible to compete in that tournament.  For the Sweeps, you must have posted at least 13 sweeps scores in the year preceding the Sweeps.  The Men’s Club, Women’s club Mixer is scheduled for Tuesday, April 29th.  The Ladies will host this year’s event.  Alan Auret will be back to defend his title at the Men’s Club Championship in May.  Your Men’s Club Handbook will be available in January and will provide the details for these tournaments as well as others.

WOMEN’S CLUB NEWS

The Christmas party was a fun event.  Thank you to Terri, Dee, and  M. L. who organized the day.  Thanks to Cookie who got the morning goodies together and to Jan who sold the raffle tickets.  Much appreciation to Chris and Virginia who sold raffle tickets. Yvonne (thank you) has taken the donated items to the Paradise Community Services.  These items will benefit the Oct. fire victims.  Nothing more to report, other than to once again wish all a happy holiday season and a new year filled with good health and much happiness.

LADIES' CLUB INSTALLATION

Ladies Club Installation

For some, it was the end of a year of service, and for a few others the anticipation of what was yet to come in 2008.  After a mixed foursome game of one best ball, the ladies gathered for lunch and a meeting, plus the installation of the 2008 officers. The ceremony was conducted by Karen Georgens, as "Holly the Holiday Spirit". Dressed in appropriate colorful garb, she called each newly elected officer forward to read her duties and present a symbol of her office in terms of the day's theme.  President Joyce Brown, the Spirit of Santa Claus was presented with a Santa Claus hat.  Vice President Jeannie Fredenburg, the Spirit of Santa's Chief Elf was presented with an elf hat.  Secretary Mary Allen, the Spirit of an Angel was presented with a halo.  Treasurer Cookie Johnson, the Good Will to All Scrooge was presented with a top hat.  The whole ceremony was both colorful and humorous.  Both participants and audience seemed to enjoy the whole thing.  Congratulations to the newly elected officers and the best of luck in 2008.  Dorothy Berger, Publicity

ACES OF THE MONTH

Jan Lola Green Tee Ace

December Aces of the Month from the red tees are Jan Salisbury and Lola Fleck.  Both ladies shot a net 72.  From the green tees, Kendelle Lynch scored a net 67.  Congratulations Jan, Lola and Kendelle. All the monthly aces will be competing for red or green tee Aces of the Year 2007 title on January 15th.  Jeannie Fredenburg

MOST IMPROVED

Congratulations to Kendelle Lynch, CCWGC most improved player for the month of Dec. 2007.  Kendelle's handicap dropped from 41 to 40, a decrease of 2.8%.  Good golfing Kendelle.  Pam
