   The Circle R Round-Up - Dec 2007

THE MEMBER'S ASSOCIATION HOLDS YEARLY GALA EVENT

Gala Event

Here Come The Clowns, the premier event for the Member’s Association this year, was scheduled for late October but, due to the firestorm in the last week of October, the Clowns did not arrive until November 1st - but WOW, did they arrive in spectacular fashion as can be seen by a few of the members who went all out to look the part.  Many others appeared in somewhat different dress and some apparently felt they didn’t need any costume to look like a clown.  I think in some cases they were right.  Regardless, the evening was a jolly one starting with an extended happy hour, which preceded the awards for the golf tournament and the election of the Officers and Board.  The golf tournament was held on the preceding Thursday with a shotgun start and an Ambrose Scramble format.  The fight for first place was exceedingly close with the team of Jane and Sam Knowles with Joyce and Jim Brown edging out the team of Kendelle and Art Lynch with Mara Lee Ashworth and Dan Albee by a score of 48.4 to 48.5.  Coming in third was the team of Cookie Johnson, John Lizotte, Terri Petrell, and Dave Kuzmich with a score of 52.2.  They beat the fourth place team by only seven tenths of a point!  Jan Salisbury, Pam Estes, Will Nelson, and Dave Kuzmich took closest to the pin.

TOM TURKEY GREETS WOMEN'S CLUB "TURKEY SHOOT" PLAYERS

Tom Turkey

On Tuesday, November 13, the Turkey Shoot golfers were greeted by a "bigger than life" inflated turkey sitting on the Clubhouse terrace.  With this happy welcome they all joined Cookie Johnson, who had planned an appealing and delicious continental breakfast.  With beverage and spare goodies in hand, the teams proceeded to their respective tees at 8AM.  With the guidance and planning of Jeannie Fredenburg, a game of scramble began.  One of our marshal’s was overheard to say, "You ladies are having way too much fun to be serious about your golf".  And fun it was.  After a tidy four plus hours, they headed to the banquet room for lunch.  Yvonne Buerfeind and her committee had colorfully decorated the room.  Scarecrows, autumn leaves, and candy corn graced each table.  A traditional Thanksgiving meal put them in a festive mood to await the announcement of winners.  As it turned out, everyone was a winner.  Congratulations to all the workers for a job well done.  Dorothy Berger, Publicity

MANAGER'S REPORT

As in the past, I am being asked by our membership if they can contribute to our employees’ Christmas fund.  The answer is an emphatic yes!  The maintenance and other behind the scenes employees are the main recipients.  Last year we collected over $1,000 worth of donations, making their holiday season a little brighter.  If you are interested in donating, kindly leave a check (or cash) in the office to my attention.  The check should be made out to Castle Creek, with a notation on the bottom indicating, “employee holiday fund”.  I’ll make sure the right employees receive your kind gift.  As we wind up our 4th year together, I can tell you that it has been a great pleasure working for and with you at our beloved Castle Creek.  Larry Taylor-General Manager.

OH'S TEE SHOTS

We are continuing our green maintenance program; periodically slicing and top dressing our greens with light sand dusting.  The slicing and sand help water penetration and smooth out the putting surface.  In addition, we are applying gypsum to our fairways to loosen the native clay soil and to mitigate salt damage from our well water.  As the weather continues to cool, we will be lowering the green mowing height to improve green speed.  When this happens, my ears tend to burn more as the 3 and 4 putting increases! As mentioned in Larry’s column, we really appreciate all your support during the Christmas Season.  Tee Oh-Superintendent

AARON'S PRO TIPS

Aaron's Pro Tips

Always play to your Strengths.  So you’ve found the fairway on that long Par 4 however you probably won’t reach the green unless you sting a career second shot.  Many of you will still pull the 3-wood and go for the green with little or no regard to the consequences.  Lying up is one option.  Sometimes a lay up with a short iron and then hitting another short iron to the green is the smartest strategy.  Always be thinking of your next shot and from where you want to play it.  If you do decide to go for the green in two, aim for one side or the other, then if you do come up short you’ll have an opening to the cup for a short chip or pitch and a chance to save par.  When the pin is to the right side of the green it is favorable to approach it from the left side and vice versa when it is on the left.  You don’t want to face a partial shot over anything to a tight pin location.   Everyone is tempted to take chances (especially when you are playing well) and sometimes you have to in match play, but you should negotiate a sensible attitude and strategy with yourself.  What are your odds - your realistic odds?  If they are not eight or nine times out of 10, play it safe.

MEN’S CLUB NEWS

Here is your line-up for your 2008 Board of Governors.  John Lizotte will continue as President for one more year.  John is also your SCGA Delegate.  If you want to bring something up with the SCGA, talk to John.  Gale Harlow, Vice President and Tournament Chairman, will have two assistants this year, Fred Coleman and Charlie Newcomb, to help run the Tournaments.  If you have any issues with any of the tournaments, take them to whoever was the tournament chairman for that day.  Secretary Myron Vanetsky, and Treasurer Will Nelson will continue as our scribe and banker.  If you have a Handicap problem, see Dan Boessow and if it is Rules, Ken Smith will be able to solve your problem.  Lee Estes continues as Membership Chairman and Dan Albee will schedule all luncheons, the Christmas party and other special events and coordinate the annual Mixer with the Women's Club.  If you have any changes to the Men’s Club Handbook or want to include something in the CC Newsletter see Harry Carter.  The Board wishes you all a very Merry Christmas and a Prosperous New Year.  Happy Golfing.

SENIORS PLAY FOR BAG OF SAND

Playing for Sand

Dave Bassett reclaimed the Sandbagger Trophy that he lost to Fred Holtermann last year.  Dave “wiped out” the field with a net score of   137.  His closest competitor was Phil Young with a 144.  In third place was Clay Walker with a 145.

SENIOR'S TRAVELING TEAM

The league season ended this month and our local team managed a split in its last match against the Escondido Hawks.  We ended the year ranked 20th, one spot above the last place team of Miramar.
Ken Smith, the Castle Creek team captain, attended the annual Board Meeting held at Sycuan Resort last week and is now in the process of organizing the 2008 team.  Any male member of the Castle Creek Men*s Club, 55 years old or older, who has an established SCGA handicap of 25 or less is eligible to join the team.  Anybody interested should contact Ken right away because the League re-starts with matches in January.  The season runs from January through October and consists of 21 teams representing 20 golf courses located throughout San Diego County.  Ken Smith, Team Captain

RULES IN PICTURES - WHO GOES FIRST?

Rules in Pictures

Bill, on the green at the far end, is about 45 feet from the hole.  Jack, in the Bunker is only 35 feet from the Hole.  Who should play first?  The order of play once off the tee is that the ball farthest from the hole is played first.  It doesn’t make any difference that Bill is on the green and Jack is off the green and in the bunker.  Since Bill is the farthest away he should play first.  Usually there is no penalty if Jack plays out of turn (see rule 10-2c).  We do this all the time to speed up play.  But, if Jack determines that Bill could give him a read or some other indication of how to play his ball, he can wait until Bill plays his ball.  You cannot require a competitor off the green but closer to the hole to play first.

WOMEN'S CLUB NEWS

Womens Club News

The second year of the Viejas day trip on Nov. 15th to the Casino and Outlet shops saw a smaller group.  However, it appears all had a nice time. Much thanks to those who made the trip and also to the contributors who didn’t take the trip. A portion of this year’s fundraiser will once again benefit the Escondido Chapter of Elizabeth Hospice.  December 4th will be the installation of the 2008 elected board.  Chairperson Karen Georgens promises to have an entertaining installation ceremony.  The following week is the annual Xmas party.  A day of golf, luncheon, and fun, fun, fun. Terri Petrell, this year’s chair, is planning the day so we know it will be 1st rate.  This is my final news blurb as president and I would like to take this time to thank those people who made my job easier. First, to all the hard working board members and those who were in charge of certain duties throughout the year. Thank you to all the non-golfing ladies and those from the Men’s club who repeatedly came out to help during our special events.  To ALL who contributed, your dedication to the ladies’ club is second to none.  Thank you to Dorothy Berger who always managed to keep me abreast of all the important tasks that needed to be accomplished.  To me, you are truly the backbone of this club.  Thank you Harry Carter for taking such good care of the Ladies’ club.  Whether as a photographer, graphic designer, or our very capable Editor-in-Chief of the Circle R Newsletter, you have always worked very hard and given your support.  It is very much appreciated.  Thank you to Larry Taylor who has consistently worked alongside our club during events that brought in players from other courses.  For one, the coupon give away for a round of golf always goes over well and makes our club a desired course to come play whether it be a SMWGA event or our member/guest day.  Also, thanks for putting the best foot forward when the course needed to shine during these events.  I’ve enjoyed my time as the president.  Indeed a new experience for me.  More importantly, it’s been an opportunity for me to give back for the sheer joy of becoming a part of the golfing world.  Never would have guessed that I would enjoy golfing as much as I do.  Now, with more time on my hands, on to learning how to actually play this darn game!  Again, thanks to all and good luck to the new board.  Barbara Bell, President
