The Circle R Round-Up - Aug 2007 |
MEN'S CLUB TAKES MIXER TOURNAMENT
SIXTY-EIGHT PLAYERS FILLED THE FIELD FOR THE ANNUAL MIXER

Twenty-eight members of the Women’s Club along with 40 members of the Men’s Club joined together on the 11th of July for the Castle Creek Member’s ninth annual Club Mixer golf tournament. The 68 players, in groups of four, were led by an “elite” group consisting of the Women’s Club Champion, Irene Fedeli and runner-up Pam Estes along with the Men’s Club Champion, Alan Auret and General Manager Larry Taylor. The better ball tournament format led to some low scores and close competition. The average better ball score for the men was 66.85 and for the women, 69.16. In addition to the interclub competition, there was also a better ball competition with the women playing against each other and in a separate contest, the men playing against the men. In the better ball competition, Jan Salisbury and Monita Patry led the way for the women with a winning 62. Will Nelson and Clelland Ward took top honors for the men scoring a net 58.
CASTLE CREEK ANNOUNCES SWEEPING CHANGES TO RESTAURANT
THE VIEW TO BECOME THE CIRCLE R RANCH

Effective in September, The View Restaurant will become the “Circle R Ranch” Restaurant, specializing in steaks and ribs. The menu will undergo a radical change that will feature both pork and beef ribs, BBQ chicken, and an assortment of steaks. New salads and appetizers will be added as well. In addition, our club will be adding outdoor lighting around the clubhouse and course to improve the nightly views. To celebrate our Grand Opening, the club will be inviting all members and VIP’s to a special “Roll-back” weekend Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, August 30 - September 1. During that time prices will be based on 1960 pricing, and will include both bar and restaurant. Members will be receiving their special invitations later this month. Be sure to mark your calendars accordingly as space will be limited each night.
MANAGER'S REPORT

We have started on the cleanup of our creeks, with #3 being the first. I must tell you that both our tree service people and I were surprised at the extent and density of the brush in the creek on #3. What we saw as a one-day job for each hole will become a 2-3 day job. So, please bear with us as we hack away. It will probably take until late September to complete the job. On a more positive note, we are working on #13 and #14 where it is dry enough to get machinery into the beds to pulverize the shrubbery. We will eventually clear all the crossover areas along the creek. We should see more immediate results, which will be clearer views and safer shots!
As to our new steakhouse restaurant, we are in the process of hiring a new chef who will have had extensive experience and training, both in preparation and cooking. I can assure you that both the food quality and the preparation will be top notch.
Finally, our new carts and new ball washers will be here within the next few weeks. It seems that Club Car closes down the factory each year in July, which pushed the delivery date back a couple of weeks. The good news is that the delay resulted in us getting the 2008 models instead of the 2007 ones. I think you’ll agree that the 2 weeks extra is worth the wait!

OH'S TEE SHOTS –
I have had numerous members asking me what are the little holes in the greens? Are they core samples? The answer is no! They are part of our unique process to remove the dead spots from old ball marks. Ball marks left unrepaired will create a dead spot within 24 hours. Unfortunately, not all of our ball marks are repaired in time, resulting in the ugly brown spots. The process removes all the dead material with the hole being filled in by massaging the surrounding plants into the void, leaving a clean unblemished spot!
We will be continuing our monthly small tine aerification protocol, with a light sand dusting applied at the end of each application. Please understand that the decision to aerify is done on a weather related basis, and cannot be announced ahead of time. We have to aerify when the temperature window allows us to proceed. Thanks in advance for your understanding!

AARON'S PRO TIPS - GET THE DRIVER THAT FITS YOU.
Driving is paramount to success. As you probably know, the flood of low scores is fueled by longer, more accurate drives that leave shorter approaches to the green. A big mistake recreational players make is made even before the swing has begun - more specifically, even before the round has started. Some golfers are dead-set in their belief that a driver should feature no more than nine degrees of loft. Most players would benefit more with a driver that features 11 or 12 degrees of loft for several reasons. One, more loft creates more backspin, and more backspin means less sidespin, and thus, less slice and hook. Second, with today’s technology it is becoming more apparent that it’s easier to create optimal launch conditions with a high lofted driver. Also, don’t for one second think that you need a stiffer shaft than what your swing realistically needs. If you are unsure of what shaft flex you need, err on the softer side. (When my swing is out-of-whack, I will even go down to seniors or even ladies flex). A key component of successful driving is getting the face square and through the golf ball, which is accomplished easier with that “softer” flex. If the shaft is too stiff, the club will feel too “boardy” and you’ll have to make compensations to get that head to turn over. Aaron Kelsey, Director of Golf
HOLE IN ONE
Bob Agnew, using his trusty nine wood, aced the #5 green on Wednesday the 25th of July. No one saw it go in "it just disappeared" and was later discovered in the hole for an ace.
At the same hole on Tuesday the 31st of July, Betty Fehrenbach, using her 7 wood, saw her ball head toward the green. After a long search by her playing partners they finally found Betty's ball in the bottom of the hole for Betty's first ace! Congratulations Betty and Bob!

MEN'S CLUB NEWS
How well do you know the Rules of Golf? Most of us golfers are learning all the time. On August 22nd you will have a chance to expand your knowledge. Jeff Ninnemann of the SCGA will be here at Castle Creek CC to conduct a presentation on the Rules of Golf. The seminar will be held in the Banquet room following the second round of the Classic tournament and will include a lunch for all at a reduced rate. We anticipate many ladies from the Women’s Club will also attend this important function. The sign up sheet for reservations will be available on the clubroom desk on the 1st of August. Reservations will close on the 15th of August and all payments for lunch must be made by that time. Check-in will be between 6:30 and 7:15 with a shotgun start at 7:30. We need a good turnout for this event to show that we do follow the rules of golf and are trying to keep up with all the changes. Please write down all the questions that you may have so that we can make this a classic event.

TRAVELING TEAM
Our Traveling Team is not doing well. We have not won a match since our home match against Sea N Air on May 24th and we have played 5 matches since that time. At the present time we are standing in last place with only a total of 17 points out of a possible 56. We are playing Fallbrook this week and next and that will be our 15th match out of 21 scheduled. The Summer Sweeps at El Camino will be held this Monday, July 23rd. Our Team will be represented by Will Nelson, Charles Newcomb, Myron Vanetsky, Frank Betonte, Ed Harbour, Ron Williams, and Warren Tankersley. The Four Ball Championships will be held at Eagle Crest on Monday, August 13th and we have posted the notice on the bulletin board for anyone interested. Ken Smith, Team Captain
MIXER

Congratulations to Will and Clel for their superb better ball performance in helping the Men’s Club take the Annual Mixer from the Women’s Club. Dave Bassett and Hideki Shimazaki also contributed with a mighty second place finish of a net 61. Jack Lakin with Fred Coleman were close behind with a handy 62. Taking the closest to the pin contest for the Men’s Club were, #5 Harry Carter, #8 Ron Williams, #15 Dan Albee, and #17 Dave Bassett
SHOOTING YOUR AGE

One of the milestones of golf is “shooting your age”. Even pro golfers don’t have a chance until they reach the ripe old age of 59. But how about shooting your age and having six shots left over? Long time member John Koda did just that on July 2. John combined 10 pars 3 birdies 3 bogeys and two doubles for a nifty 76 and net 58. Not to be outdone by much, Will Nelson shot a 77 at age 77 in 07 playing with the Bandits on June 29. Congratulations John and Will!
WRONG BALL HIT OUT OF BUNKER

Under Rule 15 Wrong Ball; 15-3b Stroke Play states: There is no penalty if a competitor makes a stroke at a wrong ball in a hazard. Any strokes made at a wrong ball in a hazard do not count in the competitors score. The competitor must correct his mistake by playing the correct ball or by proceeding under the rules. If he fails to correct his mistake before making a stroke on the next teeing ground, or in the case of the last hole of the round, fails to declare his intention to correct his mistake before leaving the putting green, he is disqualified. If the wrong ball belongs to another competitor, its owner must place a ball on the spot from which the wrong ball was first played. The original lie must be re-created as nearly as possible and the ball must be placed in that lie. - Ken Smith, Rules Chairman
WOMEN'S CLUB NEWS
Yes, we are currently in the middle of a sizzling summer season, but preparing for the 2nd annual Viejas Casino day trip slated for Thursday, Nov. 15th is in the works. If you had a profitable and/or fun time last year, you’ll want to sign up again. Also, remember to sign up friends and family for a repeat or for those who missed it last year. There is also the Viejas Outlet Center right across the street. A good opportunity to start or finish up your holiday shopping for 2007. Part of the proceeds will benefit the Escondido Chapter of Elizabeth Hospice. Please contact Barbara Bell or Cookie Johnson for details and to get listed. Getting back to summer, we are about 3 weeks away from the last major tournament for the year. On August 21st & 28th the club will play the 2 week Individual Eclectic. The sign up sheet is posted. You can also elect to play behind the field. The Santa Margarita Women's Golf Association team play started on July 30th at Escondido CC. For the first time ever, the Castle Creek team members will compete in team play on our home course. This is on Tuesday, Aug. 7th. Thank goodness we know barrancas! Also, for the ladies not playing team, you may play a sweeps day behind the field. Please remember that for August our general meeting/luncheon will be on August 14th after a shotgun start at 7:30. Sign up is now going on for the Rules Seminar hosted by the Men’s club. Please notify me to sign up for the seminar and lunch. A wonderful chance to learn the rules of golf and have questions answered. Barbara Bell, President
2007 MIXER

With the narrow loss to the men's club, the ladies' club is anxious for yet another opportunity to win next year. It was obvious that a good time was had by all. Our 1st place winners were Monita Patry and Jan Salisbury with a 62. Just one point off was a 2nd place tie at 63 with Thelma Koda/Karen Georgens and Dawn Jessee/Mary O'Brien. At 4th place were Marion Smith and Shirley Ekstrom. Taking closest to the pin were: Marion Smith took both #5 and #8, Joyce Brown #15, and, Shirley Ekstrom took #17.
MOST IMPROVED

The CCWGC most improved golfer for July is Lynn Cardarelli. In one month, Lynn's handicap went from 32 to 26!! That's a decrease of 18.2% and probably a record for the year so far. Keep up the good work, Lynn. Pam
NEW MEMBER

The Ladies' Club is happy to announce the addition of another new member, Patricia Del Rio. Patricia lives in Escondido and runs a photography studio with her husband Daniel. She must have time left over to play enough golf, because her handicap is around 15 - and that's an enviable accomplishment! Patricia may be familiar to some of you who play in Santa Margarita, as she is currently also a member of San Luis Rey Downs. Please share a warm welcome next time you see a blond lady you might not know, who hits the ball a LONG way.
SANTA MARGARITA TEAM PLAY

On July 30 the Santa Margarita teams began the season of eight matches, lasting through October 8. The competing clubs are Escondido CC, Lake San Marcos, San Luis Rey Downs, El Camino, Pendleton, Meadowlake, Morgan Run, and Castle Creek. Co-captains Monita Patry and Jan Salisbury have organized and prepared 14 players for a match play format, with one point each for gross and net on each hole, 1/2 point for a tie. One match is significant, but the running totals will determine one team gross winner and one team net winner at the end of the eight matches. This past Monday, July 30 our team played at Escondido against Lake San Marcos. Final scores for that day are Castle Creek: net 64 Lake San Marcos: net 62. In addition, Santa Margarita will award the highest scoring team from each club after each match. Our winning team was Joyce Brown and Jeannie Fredenberg with the most gross and net points of the seven Castle Creek teams. Watch the team board for weekly progress and support our team as they represent all of us.
