The Circle R Round-Up - April 2005 |
Manager's Report
Please mark Monday, May 2 nd on your calendar for our annual Member Appreciation Day. We’ll be hosting a 1:00 shotgun tournament, followed by a barbeque dinner afterwards. There will be lots and lots of prizes, both from the tournament and from a raffle after dinner. And the best news of all is that the entire event is free to all members and their immediate families! In addition, we’ll be unveiling a few new surprises that day that I’m sure you will all like. To participate, you must RSVP with Harmony at 760-749-2877. We hope to have you all attend!
While you’re at it, mark down Sunday, April 24 th on your calendar as well. Starting at 4:00, we’ll all head out to the course for our famous divot and ball mark party. After an hour or so of repairing ball marks and filling divots, we’ll buy you a complimentary drink at the bar and fill you up with appetizers. Please check in with the pro shop about 3:45 on that day.
On a final note, we are embarking into the cyber age this month. You will now be able to find our newsletter on our website www.CastleCreekcc.com. The Internet version will be expanded to include more photos and new info that couldn’t fit into our 4 page-mailing version. Our goal is to “send” the Round Up via the Internet by June

Oh’s Tee Shots
I’d like to thank all of our members and guests for their understanding and cooperation during our recent aeration. By playing past the holes we were aerating, you enabled us to virtually complete the entire 18 in two days, an unheard of achievement with our crew size! We were able to beat the approaching storm, resulting in a gentle rain falling on the newly sanded greens. The rainwater is the perfect medicine for freshly aerated greens! It was interesting comparing the plugs retrieved this year with the plugs from last year. The difference in the root growth was remarkable. Last year, the plugs were like dust- this year there was a good two-inch root structure. We were able to bore a 50% deeper hole, which will only make the greens healthier and better prepared for the upcoming warm weather. By the way, you probably noticed that we used the plugs for the new tee on #17 and bare areas around the course. Nothing is better than the rich soil gleamed from the greens!
We hope you walkers will like and use the seed buckets placed on the distance markers. A special thanks goes to Bill Martin, who is responsible for the tee trays now found on the tees. It is little touches like this that makes a difference. With the record rainfall this year, please be extra careful around the creeks - this is Rattlesnake season!

News From The View
From the positive responses I’ve heard, it looks like our new dinner menu is being well received. We’ll be continuing our popular fish and shrimp taco appetizers served at the bar in the afternoon. It’s a perfect snack after a hard day on the links! We’ll be unveiling a new lunch menu this month that will bring back some old Circle R favorites such as Will’s Beefeater Sandwich, Monte Cristo Sandwich, and others.
Don’t forget to take advantage of your 10% member discount when having dinner- it includes wine and liquor as well!

Men’s Club News
I thought March Madness was for only basketball; but with the rains we had, it surely relates to golf as well. However, our golf course should be lush and green the rest of the year. In my first message, I indicated a procedure for letting management be aware of our concerns. As a matter of policy, all matters of substance concerning golf, the facilities, the personnel, or anything else that might impact the Men’s Club should be channeled through the President or his designee, who will take appropriate action as a topic of concern at the next Advisory Board meeting. Your concerns, gripes, or general bitches should be in written form so that the documentation is on record. This topic was discussed at the recent board meeting and as agreed upon by both the Men’s and Women’s clubs.
We all felt like Lawrence of Arabia last week with the sanding of the greens. But you can now put your camel away as the sand will soon be gone and our greens will be back. There are a number of additives in the sand to break up the clay conditions and make a strong and healthy root system. On the plus side, with the 2 putt rule (if we could reach the greens in regulation) what a round we would have!

HANDICAP DESK
Your handicap depends on you posting your score at the end of each round that you play, both here and away. If you play at least 7 holes, you should post a 9 hole score. If you play at least 13 holes, you should post an 18 hole score. All holes not played are posted as a par plus any strokes you would be entitled to, based upon your handicap. Please remember all rounds must be posted. According to the guidelines established by the USGA, the handicap chairman has the right to posta par score for any members who played and didnot post!

Men’s Club tournament results
The Memorial Tournament this year had 34 participants.
The team of Bassett and Shimazaki took first place honors with a 199 followed by Gjorkovski and Yaple one stroke behind with a 200. Nelson and Smith took third place with a 204 while Carter and Miller and Berger and Koda tied for fourth place with a 207. Agnew and Lopez trailed all of the other winners in sixth place with a 209.
Attention all Men’s Club members. In our new membership directory, under “LOCAL RULES”, the page Marked Local Rules with a number 6 at the bottom, pertains to the Women’s Club only. You may not drop out of a drainage ditch without a penalty stroke.

President’s Message
We squeaked through March, golfing between rainstorms. With no Major Tournaments or Special Events, it was “Sweeps As Usual!”
Sweeps chair, Jan Salisbury, had to do some quick shuffling due to an uneven Beat The Pro reverse shotgun format. Club Pro, Rick Campbell, was literally running from shot to shot and hole to hole trying to catch the group in front of him. No one, not even Tiger, could shoot well under such conditions. Consequently, Jan changed the game to Low Net. She and Rick promise to reschedule this popular event.
The greens were aerated on Monday, March 21st and Tuesday, March 22nd, which was our women’s club regular play day. This yearly spring maintenance, which all area clubs are doing, necessitated in Jan calling an automatic 2 putt. Scuttlebutt has it that this a was very popular decision and resulted in some low scores. (We didn’t post per Handicap Chair Pam Estes’ decision.) Does this mean we are three putting more than we’d like? The greens should be good shape by press date!
Be sure to invite your guest(s) to our May 10th Leis and Lies Member/Guest Tournament soon. What A clever name! Special Events Chair Mara Lee Ashworth and her committee promise a “nui ono” time for all participants. She has planned many surprises!
We wish fond farewells to Angie and Al Bayly and Jacquie Galbraith. Angie and Al have sold their home at Castle Creek and are moving to the Tucson, Arizona area April 30th. Jacquie has sold her Oceanside home and is moving to Texas. Both ladies added much to our club’s uniqueness. They will be missed. Please remember the Women’s Club officers and board wish to hear your input.
Sue Ellen Tankersley, President
Rules
A new monthly feature on rules is being implemented this month. Several true/false or multiple-choice items will be presented each month. The correct answers will be found on the calendar page. It is hoped this feature will be informational and enjoyable.
1. T or F
A player strokes his ball from within a water hazard. The ball remains in the hazard. Under penalty of one stroke, the player may return to the spot from which the last stroke outside the hazard was played.
2. Sand may be considered a loose impediment and removed from the line of play when:
- On the green or “apron” of the green
- On the green only
- On the green anytime or on the “apron” of the green if the player chooses to putt.
3. T or F
A dropped ball rolls into a hazard. The player may re-drop the ball or play it as it lies.
Betty Wood, Chair
Major Tournaments
The annual two-week Partner’s Eclectic Tournament is slated for April 12th and 19th. (No more rain, please!!!) The sign up sheet is posted in the clubroom on the tournament board, along with the sign up sheet for playing behind the field for one or both weeks. Please note that you and your partner do not have to be available for both weeks to play in the Eclectic Tournament.
For example, partner A can play only on the 12th, while partner B can play only on the 19th. This format is fine. Another example, partner A can play both weeks, while partner B can play only one of the weeks. This, too, is fine. A reminder that if you are playing behind the field, unless otherwise prearranged, please do not join in with a group competing in the tournament. This is a fun and relaxing event - you’ve got a partner! Sign up and have a great two-week tournament.
Barbara Bell, Chair
Ace of the Month/Most Improved Player
Sweeps Chair, Jan Salisbury, announced Ace of the Month for February was Dee Dowling from the red tees and Karen Georgens from the green tees. According to Handicap Chair Pam Estes, the Most Improved Player for January was Hanalei Sun and for February was Dawn Jessee. The winning ladies, pictured below, are congratulated for their accomplishments.

Sweeps
Thank you all for being so cooperative when calling to sign up or cancel. Doing so in ample time before our Tuesday play has helped immensely. Finally, in the month of March, we got to play some golf! But then, the aerating and sanding of greens necessitated 2 putts on each green. Some groups completed play on holes that others didn’t, so we ended up playing for fun. One more reminder to please call me if you are not going to play on a Tuesday. I will let the pro shop know. Not doing this has caused a bit of a problem. Someone will call the pro shop and they put that person in a time slot that was already taken when another player had called me and I had put that caller in the same slot. If you decide to cancel or sign up on a Tuesday morning when I have left for the club, then you should call the pro shop.
Jan Salisbury, Chair
Special Events
Be sure to sign up for the Hawaiian theme “Leis and Lies” Member/Guest Tournament on May 10th. It will be a four person Shamble from the green tees. We are hoping for a large number of guests. If you don’t know guests to invite, please check with Dee Dowling or me. Colorful Hawaiian attire is suggested. Julian promises a delicious lunch. There will be lots of great raffle prizes. Don’t miss out on the fun. Sign up today! Aloha!

FILLER TRIVIA
Mark Twain : "Golf is a good walk spoiled."
Unknown: "If I hit it right, it's a slice. If I hit it left, it's a hook. If I hit it straight, it's a miracle."
Harry Vardon: "If your opponent is playing several shots in vain attempts to extricate himself from a bunker, do not stand near him and audibly count his strokes. It would be justifiable homicide if he wound up his pitiable exhibition by applying his niblick to your head."
Jack Benny: "Give me the fresh air, a beautiful partner, and a nice round of golf, and you can keep the fresh air and the round of golf."
Unknown: "It is good sportsmanship to not pick up lost golf balls while they are still rolling."
