   The Circle R Round-Up - July 2005

Manager’s Report

I’d like to take a moment to thank all our members and guests who have spent extra time repairing ball marks and filling in divots. I must say that our course looks as good as it ever has. I was reminded the other day that we have many new members who don’t know about their “hole assignments”. Last summer we assigned each member to a hole that would be theirs to maintain by repairing extra ball marks, filling divots, picking up trash, straightening markers, etc. This program has really worked as members have established a sense of ownership. The holes are assigned by alphabet of your last name: #1A, 2B, 3C, 4D, 5E, 6F, 7G, 8H, 9IJ, 10KL, 11M, 12N, 13OP, 14QR, 15S, 16T, 17UV, and 18XYZ. As before, I am challenging all our members, new and old, to help make our great course even better!

I was both pleased and delighted at the participation for our Members Appreciation Day. We had over 150 members join in for a great day of golf, food, and fellowship. In our inaugural event last year we had 40- a wonderful increase! The end of the evening saw John Buerfiend present to the club a painting of the Circle R Barn, which is now showcased in the front entrance to the clubhouse.

As part of our commitment to honor the great history of Castle Creek, we will be creating a large Hole-in-One Plaque to honor all Circle R and Castle Creek Members who have made a hole in one. I need you to help me compile a list of any member you know (including yourself!) who has made a hole in one. The only requirement is that another player witnessed the ace. Hole in ones made in non-tournament play are acceptable. Please bring your list to the office for compilation. We plan on unveiling the plaque later this year during our celebration of 50 years of 18 holes of championship golf (1956-2006).

Larry Taylor- General Manager

Oh’s Tee Report

As this newsletter is going to press, you’ll be enjoying our new black and white tees on #6. With the coming of hotter weather, our fairways will make their annual transformation from Rye/Poa Anna to Bermuda grass. The Bermuda has been lying dormant and will start growing once the ground temperature exceeds 60 degrees. Part of the fallout will be the temporary brown spots you’ll see while playing. The knee-jerk response is to immediately over water those areas. In reality, over watering will encourage the weaker winter grasses to survive, making it more difficult for the hardier Bermuda to take over. So, don’t be worried when you see an occasional brown area.

We are now embarking on our ambitious plan to rid the creek areas of the noxious Arundo, a bamboo-like plant that is harmful to the watershed area. Please be patient with the noise and confusion that results from our tractors and trash bins. The final result will be a clearer, cleaner, more defined Moosa Creek. Tee Oh-Superintendent

John Koda

Kudos to John Koda, who recently accomplished the hardest to do feat in golf-shooting his age! John, who is 80, shot a remarkable 79; making it his 6 th time he has done it!

Pro’s Report

With the coming of warmer weather, old grips can create havoc with sweaty hands. It’s time to take advantage of our June Re-grip special where you can get a Tacki-mac tour wrap grip installed for only $3 each! The grips can be installed and ready top play in just one day. Having a confident, secure grip will reduce strokes off your score! Rick Campbell- Head Professional .

Marv congratulating John on his 79 at 80

News From The View

Our summer operating hours will be lengthened so that lunch will be served in the dining room until 3:00, giving golfers an extra hour for after golf appetizers and lunch.

Men’s Club Report

The divot party on Sunday the 22 nd was somewhat well attended and for those who did show, the club had plenty of food and drink. It does not take a whole lot of time for this and it does help to keep the fairways and tees in better shape. How many times have we landed in someone’s divot and cussed because it was not repaired? It has been mentioned that perhaps a club championship tournament be held. This would not be a Men’s Club Championship; it would be a tournament to be held as a country club champion. It would be held on two Saturdays, perhaps sometime in October. It was also suggested the member guest tournament be brought back to life. These are two ideas that deserve consideration and I would like to get any feed back from the members. The details of both of the above could be worked out in order to get more member participation and have some fun at the same time. Each month an advisory meeting is held consisting of the GM of the golf course, the men and women’s club presidents and the committee heads of each club. These meetings are held to bring forth to management ideas and concerns to make this a better place. Also, for management to keep us informed of ongoing projects and course upgrades. Now that summer is near, may your drives be long and your putts short Art Lynch, President

Rules Update

A complete revision of the Local Rules has recently been completed in cooperation with the Ladies Club

and our Club Ownership/Management. The Club will send out new pages for insertion into our new 2005 Membership Directory in the near future. These Local Rules cover both the Men’s and Ladies’ Clubs as well as apply to the outside players using our golf course facility. A copy of the new/revised Local Rules is posted on the Bulletin Board in the downstairs clubroom under date of April 20, 2005. Ken Smith Inter-Club Team Captain & Rules Chairman

Women’s Club

President's Message

A warm welcome is extended to our newest member, Lynne Reynolds.

There was much activity and excitement in the air as Castle Creek Women's Golf Club made final preparations for our Lies and Leis Member/Guest Day Tournament. The tournament chaired by Mara Lee Ashworth and Dee Dowling, had lots of help from the men and women's dub members, and the Castle Creek staff. Everything went perfectly for the events for the well-planned tournament. The men helped out, loading the bags as guests arrived for check in. Judy Livingstone and her crew garnered many baked goods, deviled eggs and fruit to kick off the event. General Manager Larry Taylor provided coffee and sponsorship of the first hole. Eighty-eight women were scheduled to play in the " Las Vegas" shamble that designated the three holes on which each player's drives had to be used. That really speeded up the game and the field finished in just over four hours! Guests came from women's clubs at Meadow Lake, Escondido, San Vincente, San Luis Rey, Pala Mesa and Encinitas Ranch. One group of ladies traveled from Los Angeles to play with their Castle Creek buddies. The kitchen staff, headed by Julian Tellames, featured a Polynesian themed buffet lunch, which included an especially delicious mango stir-fry! We welcomed ten special guests, who did not participate in the golfing event, share this special day for lunch and the after lunch festivities. Mara Lee rustled up many great raffle prizes, including golf for four at Aviara, a Taylor Made Rosso putter and RS driver, golf gift certificates, restaurant gift certificates, gift baskets and clothing items. Castle Creek generously donated a free round of golf to all our guests. The beautiful orchid centerpieces, designed by Mara Lee's daughter-in-law, went to the lucky gals at each table who had a piece of scotch tape on the back of their chairs. (Mara Lee said we are getting too old to look under the seat!} A unique feature of the tournament was every player was a winner! All teams in all flights were paid. Ties were broken "Vegas Style" with the luck of the card draw -highest card won the tie! It was only appropriate that Low Net Over the Field honors went to the foursome of Mara LeeAshworth and guest Claire Davis; and Terri Petrel and guest Donna Marie Cruickshank! First place winners in the three flights are listed below.

Oahu Flight Kauai Flight Maui Flight
Hanalei Sun/ Mary Ann Grubaugh/ Karen Georgens

Shirley Price/Takeo Komiyama /Nancy Chubbuck

Linda Abedor/ Monica Patry/ Marion Smith

Mara Lee wanted me to thank everyone for all the help, from the tee sponsors, raffle prize donors, support with breakfast, mulligans and raffle tickets. It truly takes a village. A huge thanks you to Mara Lee and Dee for staging such a lovely and magnificent event!

Major Tournaments

We are gearing up for the 2005 Club Championship Tournament. This is a 3 round event to be played on June 14th, 21st, and 28th. The sign up sheet is posted on the Tournament Board. Also posted is the sign up sheet for the end of the field play and for 9 holes only play. We are hoping for a great turnout, after all, on any given day, you can be the champion!!! Or will Marsha Coleman repeat??? Last year's championship was a cliffhanger, with Marsha defeating Jacquie Galbraith by one stroke at the tournament's conclusion. This year should be equally exciting, as we have a number of members in contention. Whatever the outcome, it will be fun for all of us just to be out there swinging the club! Barbara Bell, Chair
